Sonichu Sonichu-themed RPG Discussion Thread -

Based on the success of this thread and everyone else coming out of the woodwork to set up or play in more games, myself included, I decided we should move discussion and planning of any future games to a separate thread to ensure the original doesn't get drowned in discussion of other games like it. So far we have a Call of Cthulhu/Chandler game being pitched, and there are certain to be more on the way, so feel free to talk and organize here.

This will also become a thread for discussion of roleplaying games in any of the other lolcow-verses we've been accustomed to, if the Paranoia game in the Deagle Nation is any indication.

Is there any particular RPG that would be suitable for a CWC theme? Don't Rest Your Head worked out pretty well clearly and apparently Call of Cthulhu would too. I'm just curious as my knowledge of tabletop RPG's is cursory at best.

We have...Don't Rest Your Head, as DZttE suggests, Call of Cthulhu in all its many guises (Trail, Cthulhu Dark, maybe even Delta Green if you like your horror soaked in action), let's see, what else is there...

If you want something comedic, maybe straight action might be in order. I know of a system called Wushu, which is great for action RPing and I've found works well even with concepts that might seem really overpowered on paper. You could take all those overblown fights from Sonichu itself and try to transplant something in there as a parody of that style, where everybody has a turn being ludicrous, especially when the game's mechanics itself seem set on making showing off worth it.

It might take some finagling, but how about Dark Heresy? Same sort of unreliability of tapping into Eldritch powers, just replace "Psyker" with something suitable and call the Horrors of the Warp something else to match, same usually-doomed cast of player characters unless you're clever and lucky. Just replace your guardsmen, psykers, inquisitors and the like with CWCville's police force, Chus and things like that, or be hapless Jerkops, Jerkhiefs or something. I couldn't help you run a DH game though, I know nothing about the engine or how it's supposed to play except for its unpredictability. However, 1d4chan is a great place to look if you want to know about Dark Heresy, since they loves them some 40K.

As for my tastes, I'm an enormous fan of Cat because I like cats, it's really easy to teach and adapt the Advantage System, and really, John Wick himself said wherever you feasibly see cats dithering around, you can set a game. I can easily imagine cats having a really hard time living in CWCville and trying to carve out an existence, especially with the trollfanon of feral Sonees and Roseys making any stray cats look more like Nermal. But there's another side to it too, since Cat is supposed to be about cats being blessed with mythic powers to fight monsters that humans are totally unaware of. And since those monsters tend to feed off negativity, sloth, despair, jealousy and the like, well, you can tell why a cat would come here looking for a good brawl or two.

And there's one more game which I've never been able to find a copy of, which was a /tg/ homebrew called "Panic: the game of little girls running," inspired by survival horror games like Clock Tower. It's a shame I could never find the mechanics for that, because seriously, what's the most dangerous thing to be in CWCville but a boyfriend-free girl?

I'm still waiting for someone to explain how a Changeling version of Sonichu would work.

As for your question, hmmm...Changeling. I'm not too familiar with that, but that's one of the White Wolf games which works on d10 pools, right?

Not sure which (if any) system would work best, but I'd be interested in a "straight" Sonichu RPG; players are a group of original Sonichus and Rosechus (do not steal) and have to battle Jerkops and trolls to defend CWCville.

Deep within the world beyond ours, there is a place of nightmares and wonders. A place where anything can - and probably does - exist.

The lords of this place go by many names - The Gentry, The True Fae, The Kindly Ones, The Others - and their nature is just as mercurial as their name among mortals. They are Lord, King and God over their Arcadian realms, but what use is a king without subjects? Periodically, or simply when it strikes their fancy, these strange, oh so familiar yet unknowable beings shall ride forth into the world of mortals, taking back to their realm what they want most - us.

Of the many Arcadian Lords and Ladies, there is one who is spoken of in hushed tones amongst those who know of him. He has many names, many different titles. The Great Director. The Mayor of CWCville. The True and Honest Chris. His grasp is most tight, only one has ever been known to have escpaed from his dread clutches. It is said that the only thing stopping him from crushing our world 'neath his mighty flab is his eternal battle with his otherworldly rival, Clyde Cash.

The people The Mayor takes are unlucky even amongst those taken. Only one has escaped, his identity stripped from him, his name now a mockery of whatever he stood for in life. Asperchu told the world what he could of The Mayor and the horrors within his realm.

The Mayor never leaves his realm, perhaps because he cannot, or is too lazy. But there is one he always sends for him. It used to be human, once. It had a name, and probably a family. Now it has only one purpose in life, one mission.

To Zap to the Extreme.

Fanciful writing aside, I'd probably run CWCling: The Lolst as an escape scenario, the players taking on the role of Chris' sweethearts past and present attempting to escape from the clutches of The Great Director and his dread, recolored host.

The Tale of Ragin' Reggie and specifically the absurd lengths to which the DM seemed to go to create monsters to match Reggie makes me wonder if you could do an All Flesh Must Be Eaten campaign in CWCville.

My sticking point, though, is if you can do it WITHOUT straight-up zombies. What would take their place? The 'chus don't strike me as things in hordes, except maybe the Sonee-Rosey thing, so what might take their place? Starving citizens driven dumb by being in CWCville? Somebody turned off the electric fence in the Fashion Square Sweetheart Pen and it turns out they've reduced themselves to the level of the caged women in Bloodsucking Freaks? Starving Pokemon driven mad by being forgotten and abused by the 'chus in CWCville who get some glee out of it and the regular folks who don't know better? General CWCville autism juju?

Not sure which (if any) system would work best, but I'd be interested in a "straight" Sonichu RPG; players are a group of original Sonichus and Rosechus (do not steal) and have to battle Jerkops and trolls to defend CWCville.

I'm biased, but I'd still suggest Wushu if you want something that plays really damn fast and encourages writing a lot rather than having players fiddle around with too much crunch. Problem with that, though, is that it's really, REALLY light, and there isn't really enough to distinguish different players with different powers from each other. I mean, if you figure out when, I dunno, Punchy Sonichu's Spiky Knuckles or Sonichu's Extreme Zappin' are appropriate to use, then maybe they're different, but if you use them in the same places and they're both statted at a Trait value of 5, then they're exactly the damn same.

Then again, maybe you could say the same of FATE, which is really adaptable and nice and fast to learn...

Here's what I'd also like to know, on the note of playing a "straight" Sonichu RPG: how about doing a game as a mod of Kobolds Ate My Baby? You're all second-string, slightly-incompetent Sonichus who go places on the demands of Mayor Chandler (All Hail Mayor Chandler!) and die hilariously.

Alternately, you're all second-string, slightly-incompetent Jerkops who go places on the demands of Mary Lee Walsh (Uhhhh....All Hail Mary Lee Walsh?) and die hilariously.

I like the sound of Cat! With that sort of gameplay, I can imagine having the players run into some of the Chandler cats, or at least the spirits of them, who wish to have their unfortunate fates avenged in some way. And if this RPG were to happen I know I'd totally be a munchkin cat. (since it's the closest thing to a corgi hehe)

If I do it, which in all likelihood I will, I'll probably run it vanilla. I had ideas for modifications to it but I think they might be going further from the idea of roleplaying as regular cats in crazy adventures since my last concept had the housecats acting like spoofs of action heroes and I think once I have cats packing heat I might have lost the plot a little.

So now it's time for an actually important question: where do you think we should put the next games we play, if we run them? Games is an option, and so is running the threads in the requisite topic threads (the CWCville ones in the Sonichu forum, Left 4 Autism in the general Games forum, etc). What'll everyone and the staff be comfortable with?

Quote Me Now Announcement!

After the success of Don't Zap to the Extreme, I began work on a new game in my line of what I am now terming Quote Me Now's Super Pointless Exciting Role Playing Games (S.P.E.R.P.Gs)!

It's not finished yet, but it's finished enough that I now feel comfortable opening recruitment for...Call of C'Handler!

You will be playing paranormal investigators called in to investigate a strange series of odd murders occuring on a construction site. Will you be able to overcome the horrors of whatever lurks below? Or will your mind snap under the strain of learning what, exactly, is going on?

This game is for 4 brave investigators - Hunger Mythos has already asked me to reserve a spot for them, so I have 3 spaces left! The game will be organised for Some Point in the Future (tm) and will take place over Roll20 voice chat. Now with 100% more of Quote Me Now's sexy British accent! I'll also need to sort some method of recording the session for other people to listen in after the fact, because it would be much less fun for the forums as a whole otherwise!

This is very much a work in progress, so I can't promise results next week or anything, but I'd like to have my players before I write the specifics of the story.

Awww crap, voice chat? Is there some sort of text system, because I really want to play but I don't think I can get a voice chat to work.

Anyway, would you still like some help designing the Lovecraftian take on Sonichu? I've got plenty of ideas.

I think I'll have to wait for any after-action reports. I have my classes to deal with, my own projects and I'd rather not drag the game down with erratic scheduling.

I look forward to seeing the results, though!

That sounds great! Put me down as one of the players! I love Lovecraft and Christory so I'm psyched to see those two merge.

I will say, I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to make voice chat work for me. Quote Me, do you think that its going to be integral to the game? I just want to know beforehand is all.

Strands of Fate is a nice simple system and the core rules have a lot of superpowers. Magi-Chan is fairly easy to replicate.

I think I'm ready to set up that Cat game. I think I'll start recruiting, myself.

You're cats sent in after a failed invasion for one desperate strike into CWCville to destroy the heart of the cats' eternal enemy according to Cat: the Boggins, monsters humans can't see. I'll let you guys find out what lurks inside, and what happened to the last guys...

I just found something, something I figured was so important I had to double-post.

Fiasco sounds like a great, fast RPG for playing misadventures in CWCville, especially smaller ones where you aren't trying to take the whole damn thing down and are just trying to live there. Set up your characters, and let things go gloriously wrong.

I listened to Role Playing Public Radio play a round of this. It started with an Anchorman-esque news team and ended with man-rooster fight clubs.
