Never said it was a bad armor or a bad cover, but I wouldn’t be shocked if SNK had two covers prepped in advance for both Sony as well as prudish countries like China
40th anniversary had like 4-5 covers done by multiple artists because you get some of the alts as art cards. SNK still employs artists who were there from the beginning.

Why is Sony waging a war on thighs? What an odd choice.
Atelier is a shit cover because Gust has lost almost all it's semi-competent people so that's not censorship, the other one just looks like a choice of formatting and layout because the full image is on the interior.

I dunno both of those are real weak if you're gunning for censorship, like there's nothing in the game that's been altered in either of the cases. However from a quality standpoint both games are pretty bad. Gust may be on it's way out. They're going on 4 Atelier games in a row that have been very below average,

I still don't think having a different cover is a form of censorship especially when she's wearing the armor she gets in the game. Like if it was traced over it would be understandable, but it's an entirely different image they used for the whole cover. That's kinda really stretching it, because now you're getting into creative choice and freedom.
Agreed, I think when you start complaining about altered covers * which are usually done for the sake of retailers * you're kinda chasing ghosts.

PS4 and Switch have different cover size ratios, there's also always been a difference between US and japan when it comes to what's considered and attractive layout since the 8-bit era. The Switch's cover size is shorter and thinner than a PSP's case size but the switch is still a more vertical cover while the PS4's is more square shaped. Covers are not one size fits all and need to be altered.

This might be the case with that Blade Arcus Rebellion cover, but the Atelier: Lulua rearranged the cover for no good reason, to the point where the western cover looks worse.

While you can piss on the games by saying you think they're bad, that doesn't change what's happening and Sony doesn't have the benefit of the doubt on this. If someone keeps shop lifting, and you catch them putting things in their pockets, are you really going to believe them when they say "I was going to pay for them, I just forgot to get a basket."?

If these examples are "real weak", then why change them at all? The Japanese Atelier cover at least had a good flow to it and didn't look like a half arsed photoshop job. I agree that complaining about there being slightly less thigh on a game cover is stupid, but I think we can also agree that demanding a character thighs be cropped from the cover is also stupid and does nothing to prevent rapes or protect the children or whatever the reason is this week.

Were retailers demanding the thighs be covered? On the rare occasional a journalist actually does their job and asks the ratings boards, retailers, etc. The answer was always "we have nothing to do with it".

So yes, taken in 100% isolation, this is a stupid thing to complain about in the same way saying 1 dumb thing on Twitter doesn't make someone a lolcow. Taken as a pattern of behaviour, it's exhibit 357 against Sony.

I know I've beat this dead horse enough already, but it's both frustrating and funny. These are people so triggered by a little bit of anime thigh that they feel the need to redesign the cover just so people don't have to see it. And for what? Do they think Tumblr feminists are suddenly going to buy Atelier in droves because they edited the cover? Do they think that they stopped a dozen rapes by doing this?

Apparently it's okay for a depicted minor to have sex in a video game, but you can't get lewd from Japan. Since Sankaku again I'll summarize it: Life is Strange 2 has Sean - who is 16 - having sex with another character. Now it's obviously not supposed to be sexy - but Tumblr will find a way - and something of a plot point, but that's still a minor in a sex scene and I don't see the episode removed from the PS4. You can't have mature adult women showing skin, or questionably legal loli, but it's perfectly fine to portray a minor having sex in an entertainment media. Also the media seem to completely ignore the scene in question, aside from the Metro who seem to praise the developers for it. These same media would go on to lambaste Japan for their lewdity, but I guess if it's coming from France it's a-okay.

And for the record, I wouldn't really care if it weren't for the hypocrisy of it all. I'm of a standard where so long as it's fictional - and not based on anyone living or dead - shit's good to go.

All these japanese soft core porn games are apparently doing terribly on whatever platform they release on.

It doesn't matter if they're censored or uncensored, nobody is buying them in numbers to justify their continued existence.

They're kind of running into the problems that ESPN has run into, the internet does what they do better and for free, and everything they do is worse than what others do.

The standards are different if it's ugly or postmodern.

Modern feminism is at war with the sexuality of straight men.

I think you are forgetting the fact that most of these games don't cost much, if anything to make. Which is why they keep getting made and released in America. They don't need to sell much to be profitable. Its a niche product, so they are budgeted with that in mind.

Even if they're "bad" or "doing poorly" as you say, what reason is there for censoring them? For all I know, the only people who'd be willing to buy them are those looking for smut. So if they take out the smut or censor it, then who's gonna buy it? They'd lose their only potential customers.

I doubt that. You dont make a dozen sequels to a failing series, and these games aren't some kind of artistic projects studios fund to gain prestige or to build a stable of future franchises. Especially given all the bad press and risk of censorship they face.

They apparently cost more to make than the average AA title, they usually include voice actors and other value added shit that's expensive and doesn't fix the core gameplay problems(or lack of gameplay). But there's also an argument that they're fronts for embezzlement.

Like something like Legend of Grimrock, Shantae and the like will cost less to make than Senran kagura.

Essentially they suffer from the same problems like the one gone home dev who decided to hire Game of Thrones actors for his indie game that was nothing but a story book,

Not sure what you think actually goes into making these games. These companies aren't hiring Hollywood voice actors to voice in their anime games. Some of them don't even get English language tracks, only subtitles. And voice actors work for peanuts compared to film and tv actors.

I mean of course Senran Kagura, a fully 3D game would cost more to make than Shantae, a 2D sprite game, but that doesn't mean its extremely expensive to make or cost more than your average AA title (those aren't exactly high quality 3D models). Also Senran Kagura is somewhat of an outlier due to the large amounts of gameplay and amount of 3D modeling work required to make it. Many anime titty games don't need nearly that much work (some are closer to visual novels and than full games; some are outright visual novels with little gameplay at all).

And I've never heard of any titty game maker being arrested for embezzlement.

What about the Yakuza fronts bwcause like the Yakuza fronts for sex. It aint prostitution if there is no penetration.

Still one major issue is most of these games had discussion of it banned on Neogaf pre purge and now Resetera. Every single one of these fanservice games had the mods banning discussion and given Resetera courting journalists it is easy to relate.

There's weird shit that's gone on with a few games, especially games that have had idol groups be contracted to record a song.

It's a real gray area, but it's not just some people doing the bare minimum on a game for supposedly easy money.

Let's not forget what happened to Dragon Half, granted it's an anime but it's all japan and similar demographics.

That and there's game companies who also do gambling machines which in itself is seedy. Gambling has never been clean no matter what country.
