Nowadays, I mostly watch it if there's a new run I haven't seen before, a runner I actively follow, a game I run myself, or there's literally nothing better to watch.
They got rid of all the good runners because they were problematic/to make room for boring trannies, though.
Last year's Split/Second troll run was god tier.

Yeah. I looked at the list and there's only a handful I'm really that big a fan of. Though I'm glad Kariohki is finally getting to run Silhouette Mirage on the main GDQ for once, even if it's the weird-ass online only version we're getting this year.
This one was probably my favorite from last year. Just a bunch of dudes having a good time. Of course, one of the couch guys from it (Dr. Fatbody) managed to get his ass banned, so I guess there's that.
I might put it on in the background but like others have said if it's online only it's not really all that different from all those smaller marathons that have become ubiquitous even before quarantine, except those are usually more specialized which makes them more interesting. The only real reason to watch GDQ anymore is the (almost completely sterilized) autism lottery and while I'm sure some troons will try to start shit on twitter for attention as usual, it's just a big meh.
Background noise. It's c-tier entertainment but autism being forced to address an audience instead of just repeating hundreds of channel inside jokes is a billion times more tolerable than standard game streams, especially because it can't drag on more than a few hours. The only time it gets really grating is when the crowd is involved, and there's no crowd in an online marathon.
Speaking of which, have there been any other good marathons or runs recently? I'm running low on things to background during my endless data-entry hell.
If you've got any interest in the VB and have a 3DS there's a really excellent emulator that actually renders the 3D properly. I've seen people stream from that as well since if you've got an exploited N3DS XL there's a system module that lets you stream from the console.

Edit: I actually quite like it so far, the commentary on DeS has been very informative and donations are very subdued. Might be the donation reader though.

FWIW that was an unfortunate screengrab taken to make the dude look bad. He was reaching down to grab something IIRC. The person sitting there even popped up on Twitter to defend him. Of course, since this is AGDQ, what's the chance this same thing happened multiple times and we're thinking of different incidents?
The Demon's Souls run is really good so far. Nice commentary and I like that they aren't forcing them to have cameras on the runners.

The ESA Break the Record streams were pretty good background noise stuff. 12 hours of top runners all trying to break the world record at the same time. Unfortunately, I don't think any of those are on YouTube, so you'd have to go through the zillions of ESAMarathon's videos on Twitch to find them.
For something a bit different, there's the videos from the Really Really Longathon's Lots of Lore Marathon from a few months back. It's mostly Cutscene% runs, and (obviously) mostly RPGs, so there's a bunch of 12-24 hour runs of games that could keep you occupied if you wanted. The Deadly Premonition All Cutscenes run, in particular, is pretty worth listening to. AFAIK, they're all on YouTube, so they're pretty easy to check out.

Trihex's chat, I suppose. Though there's a whole other type of spastic in there, so I'm not really sure how much better it actually is.
There's a fair few others hosting, but chat's mostly dead in them.

Complete agreement, this is peak background noise. The runner having an excellent sense of comic timing really helps it too. I keep glancing over to see things like this.
The worst thing about ESA really is that fucking 60-second bumper they've been using in the last month or two with the WE JUST HIT TEN K DOLLAR and WOOPWOOPWOOP bullshit over the hammy movie-trailer orchestral music. I don't think I've ever had any bit of promotional material make me as irritated as that, especially since it's the only one they have and it's guaranteed to be between every run even if the runs are only 10 minutes long.
All of the speedrun events get obnoxious with the donations. I'm not sure why they thought it was a good experience to constantly interrupt the runners with the callouts.
