In 2012, indie dev/pretentious hack Spencer Yan announced Midnight Animal, a promising fan sequel/total conversion mod for Hotline Miami 2. It got greenlit on Steam and even recieved the blessings of Dennaton, the orignal devs. All was going good until his girlfriend broke up with him, and instead of using that experience to contribute something unique to the game, he instead turned it into Midnight Animal: A Story of Love and Forgetting, a thinly veiled knockoff of Atlus's JRPG Persona 5. This, naturally, completely pissed off many Hotline Miami fans who'd been following the project for four years. Spencer's reaction was to basically flip them the bird say "It's my game, not yours".
He didn't rip off just the aesthetic, either. While the core Hotline Miami gameplay remained, features from the Persona series like developing social links with characters to obtain different Personas (masks that represent hidden facets of the character's personality that also grant special powers) were lifted.
Spencer's reaction, of course, was to deny fucking everything, claim he was merely "inspired" by Persona 5, and then kill Midnight Animal due to the harsh backlash he got. It's now called "Exegesis" and more or less now a visual novel...er...sorry, "literary event". Of course, he's not quite done ripping things off.
Of course, you can follow him on Twitter to see him complain about those dirty dang trolls. He also has a Steam, Patreon, Tumblr, and Wordpress.
