In an earlier thread, there was a discussion about how Chris' stress comes from not getting what he wants. Now, I know he acts like a giant manchild but it also makes me think of him as an example of a grown spoiled entitled to everything brat. We know that growing up, he got everything he wanted but now that he doesn't, he acts out or get stressed. Am I the only one who thinks that Chris getting spoiled as a child is a factor into who he is today, other than he pure obliviousness to reality?

It is. And I'm sure you're not the only one who thinks that way.

Its like what my mom told me, "you spoil a child, they will become ungreatful people who feel like people should feed them from a platter"

he's the perfect example of coddling parents who never really punished him. they treated and barb still treats him as her special baby. the world is his playpen and he throws a fit when he cannot play with the toys he wants.

When people think "spoiled," there's the connotation that the parents have some sort of misplaced/improperly-expressed affection for the child in question.

Chris, on the other hand, got no such affection. Basically, it was "Here's what ya wanted so you can shut up already."

Autistic (untreated) + Spoiled is a recipe for disaster.

People who have autistic children that they feel so sorry for that they want to spoil, or in Borb's case are so old and tired and/or lazy that they just give into them rather than putting in the patient and grueling work it takes to teach them about life and give them a modicum of discipline and self control or maybe even a nudge toward independent living skills need only look to OPL to see how they are NOT doing them any favors in life.

I always thought Borbs redneck minds just translated Autism as "retarded" so they treated him like a simple child well into his teenage and adult years.

In some ways. chris was more like a pet to be looked after other than a child to be raised and taught to become a well rounded adult.

If they simply thought Chris was retarded, I don't think he would have gone to college.

This.

In that You're Always Pretty video, we see how Barb actually despises him.

The irony that Chris will never understand is that getting whatever you want leaves you empty and unfulfilled. Chris has no real aspirations. :asperchu:

In all fairness, he is unlikely to EVER get what he really wants -- that mythical "sweetheart from the ground up."

In this case he has aspirations well and beyond what he is capable of achieving.

Judging from that video, it seems like Chris was an "accident." As if Borb never intended to have a child, but did.

I feel that Bob and Barb really resented if not flat out hated Chris prior to being diagnosed with autism. I don't think the spoiling came until after they found out their screaming, constantly tantruming kid actually had a mental disorder and felt bad for the prior treatment of him.

That's not to say they didn't continue to resent him until the present day (or until the day he died in Bob's case). Just that instead of "Shut up! Stop screaming! You're not getting shit!" it became "Awwwwwww poor autistic baby what do you want? Mommy and Daddy will get you anything to keep you quiet-I mean make you happy."

Don't underestimate his ego. If everyone just handed Chris whatever he wanted, he'd convince himself that he earned it. Either because the world owes him for all the bad things he's been through, or because he picked weeds or something. Or he'd think he's somehow doing other people a favor, as in the case of his tugboat. He expects everyone to feel sorry for him when they see how much suffering they're causing him.

"Hating" is an odd word to use, as it implies a level of involvement that you typically wouldn't associate with people who ditched their son with a sitter for the better part of a decade while they hit the bar.

Their post-diagnosis "caring" was less about Chris and more about passing themselves off as beleaguered parents who needed everyone to cut 'em some slack every once in a while.

"Shut up! Stop screaming! You're not getting shit!" is the best thing to say to Chris.

His understanding of work and earned is so fucked up. This is the guy who considers buying anime wing hair clips earning them.

That might actually make sense in a way if Chris actually earned the money he used to buy them.
