Hello everyone, DSPGaming Absolute Brainlet here! Since it`s spooky games month, I decided "why not make a screenshot LP of a horror game?". There were many choices, but ultimately I decided on what is perhaps my favorite horror game of the decade: Spooky`s Jump Scare Mansion.



What is this game?
Spooky`s Jump Scare Mansion is a first-person horror game, where you, the protagonist, must make it through the 1000 rooms of the titular character Spooky`s mansion. But things aren`t as they seem... (and that`s all I`m gonna tell you, to keep most of the game a surprise)

Why this game?
There are two reasons:
1. This game has a special place in my heart and by doing this LP I hope to introduce more new players to its glory.
2. There`s a surprising amount of stuff to cover for what seems to be a first-person game, so I feel like it would perfectly fit with the rest of the games that have been covered here.

Also you may have noticed that I`m playing the HD Renovation. There are actually two versions of the game: the Unity remake I`m gonna be playing, developed by
Albino Moose Games, and the original that was made on Game Maker 8 and developed by Akuma Kira. Thus, a question may arise...

Why not the original?
Again, there are two reasons:
1. Even though the original is free, I feel like the HD Renovation is the definitive way to experience this game, since it`s way more polished.
2. I played HD so much, the original is basically completely alien to me now.


Didn`t Joel/Vinny/insert your favorite content creator play this game already?
Yeah, but they just played through the game (and Karamari, in Vinny`s case) once. That`s not what I`m doing here. The goal of this LP is to show EVERYTHING this game has to offer, and I do mean EVERYTHING.

Here is the opening text crawl that tells you everything you need to know about the backstory... for now.
"For as long as you can remember, legend have been told about the derelict mansion upon the hill that casts a blanket of darkness over the town. The history of the house itself is virtually unknown, and even the town`s oldest residents cannot remember the mansion`s origin. Being an avid history enthusiast, you embark up the mountain to visit the manor. Hoping...."

Let`s check the options first, shall we?

So far, you can only really play the game in english, as the localizations to other languages aren`t complete yet. Though there is a fan korean patch on the Steam community page, so if you`re korean, you`re in luck.
Also, you might have noticed those two options allowing you to turn off Jump Scares - self-explanatory - and specimen... uh, we`ll get to that later. Also, fun fact: beating the game with both options off nets you a secret ending.

Here`s the keyboard controls. Mostly basic stuff here, but there are two options at the bottom that seem interesting. "Attack" implies you get a weapon of some sort, and you do! But we`ll get to that MUCH later. As for 'Style Swap"... I`ll show you what it does in a bit.
There`s also a separate tab for mouse controls, which is where I have the attack button mapped to.

Here we have three options: The Mansion, which is the "story mode" of the game, Endless Mode, which speaks for itself, and Karamari Hospital(+), which is... you`ll see. There`s also Spooky`s Dollhouse.... again, you`ll see... and Build-your-own mansion, which is gonna be the game`s map editor, though they`re not out yet.
Since we can`t just jump straight into Endless or Karamari without playing the main game, let`s start with The Mansion.

By the way, that door over there, the one your character presumably came in through? You can`t go back, no matter how hard you try. The same applies to every other entrance door (at least, in normal rooms).

So now the actual gameplay begins. As you saw in the controls, you use WASD to move around, the mouse to look around, E or Space to open doors and interact with objects, and SHIFT to sprint.

But sprinting reduces your stamina, which is the yellow bar on the top left. And the red bar is your health bar... that doesn`t bode well.

And here`s our first encounter with the titular jump scares... but it`s just a cardboard cutout of a spider? There`s a note on it, though.

Anyway, about those jump scares. For now, they`re just there to maybe spook you a bit. But their true purpose will be revealed soon enough...

Now here`s something interesting. This is the Elevator - this game`s version of a checkpoint. Interacting with that purple cross saves your game. In order to progress, you have to press that button in the middle, which will cause the elevator to take you down to the next "floor".
This place might not look like much now, but soon you`ll cherish it.

Despite being the first actual enemy, it`s not that simple of an encounter. This thing lays down puddles of green goop, which, as already explained, make you slow as balls.

Furthermore, it has to complete this little animation in order to deal damage. AND that means its attacks can be dodged. You can see me fail such a dodge here, because I`m fucking exceptional. But trust me, it`s doable, and easily so. At least we know how much damage it deals now.

This thing only comes out when you pass under one of those ceiling holes. The best thing to do here is walk until it comes out, then leg it.

It`s quite fast, and in long rooms like the Abyss Room it will catch up quite easily. Mercifully, it doesn`t do that much damage and whenever it hits you, it briefly retreats, before circling back around and continuing the chase.

1. Go through it until you get to loop 4.
2. Check the note.
3. Check the door, which should now be open.

So the goal of this game is to kill people... to fill up that red meter on top that`s constantly decreasing. As you get further, the speed at which the meter goes down increases, and so does Spooky`s movement speed. So what happens if you let the meter run out?

The goal here is to make these red cars crash by driving into them. But, due to a glitch, I just drive above them like the fucking flying cars cheat in GTA.
How did that happen?

Driving over one of the enemy cars while it`s spinning out launches your absolute unit of a vehicle into the air. This glitch has been in the game for a while, but it`s been kept in since it`s relatively harmless and hilarious to boot.
So with Spooky Kart done, there`s just one arcade machine left.

This one`s quite simple. Her only real strength is being able to fly and go through walls.

Also of note is that she`s the first enemy that speaks to you, saying things like "Come here" and "Stop" .

Huh, did the game get another update recently? I'm aware of the HD remaster but I don't recall the slime monster specimen physically swiping at you. It would just damage you with its outstretched hand with no extra animation iirc.

Okay, so he teleports behind you when you`re not looking at him... so you just have to keep him in your eye-sight, right?

WRONG. Looking at him for too long also causes him to teleport behind you. So what the fuck are you supposed to do?
Well...
Whenever he teleports, he does this laugh. So the strategy is:
1. Walk until you hear his laughter behind you.
2. Run a bit to dodge the hit. Be careful to not hit one of those cutouts, they`ll block ya.
3. If the room is short enough, just sprint. He won`t catch you.
4. Repeat until success.

So this guy is similar in mechanics to Specimen 4. The only difference is that he does less damage and clouds your vision with static (which is also part of his chase theme).

He doesn`t look so menacing with Style Swap on, though.
Also of note is that he assaults you with flashing images every time he hits you. The same thing happens when you either kill or get hit by one of his deer.
He`s also the second enemy capable of speaking, commonly saying these things:
"Join us."
"Why do you run, child?"
"Your submission is inevitable."
"Your flesh will sustain my children."
That`s pretty much all there is to him.

While that deer fuck might be invincible, the others sure as hell aren`t. For instance, you can cut down these cutouts. It`s the perfect payback for all the stress they`ve inflicted upon you until now.

Here`s another example - the centipede piece of shit that`s been hounding you for the entire game. So what happens when you smack him?

He`s forced to temporarily retreat. Useful if you don`t want him catching up to you in long rooms such as the Abyss Room.
The hitbox is also mercifully large, allowing you to safely hit him without being hit yourself. You just need a bit of timing.
