It really is. I've founded about five colonies now and I'm in the 'grid search' phase of just picking a constellation, looting it dry, and then dumping it back onto my worlds. Once I've looted the whole sector I'll go to war with the hegemony and begin systematically destroying the factions until I'm the only civilised being around. Gonna be a good fucking time.
If you're not already, you might want to try the megamod called "Nexerelin." It adds some cool faction warfare stuff onto the basic gameplay, and it gives an "official" ending to a play through when you and your allies (optional) take over the sector.
