The lastest skins (optional cosmetics bought with real money) for the game League of Legends have been unveiled and center around the "magical girl" theme. One of the characters getting a skin from this line is Ahri, a very popular character that is a foxgirl with a sad backstory.
As a character that is female, cute, and caters to various kind of fetishes (kemonomimi, succubus, etc) along with being easy to play and fitting most teams, a lot of players, more or less well mentally adjusted appreciate her and were looking forwards to the skin.
However, since this is in Salt Mines, you can guess not everyone is happy with it. Ahri kind of divides the playerbase, most notably for having being a good all-around character for pretty long and getting more attention than other champions, but something of another kind popped up recently.
Star Guardian Ahri, unlike other depictions of the character, shows Ahri without Naruto-like whiskers on her face. And people are going fucking MENTAL about it.
It should be noted this isn't the first time Ahri is depicted without whiskers. A previous skin, Arcade Ahri, did not have whiskers - they were added after someone a bit too obsessed with Ahri bitched about it on Reddit.
With asked about the whiskers' absence on Star Guardian Ahri, the concept artist for Ahri explained it was voluntary because it did not fit the thematic and aesthetic they wanted for the skin.
And somehow, the explanation from the artist of the skin and designer of the character itself failed to calm down the overly attached fans of the character (can I call them Ahritards?) and the release of the skin's splash art (preview in the store and art on the loading screen only brought more criticism - I'm sorry, nitpicking, where people STILL whine about the lack of whiskers.
The salt went as far as to have Ahritards harass a Riot member on Twitter about it - a Riot member that doesn't even seem to have power about whenever the whiskers can be added or not. (extended version where someone goes nuclear over a "xd")
Despite the Riot member explaining that there is no other reason behind SG Ahri's absence of whiskers but the one that was explained, a number of lolcow-worthy Ahri players (including Mistress_Ahri, that I mentionned in Personal Lolcows, maybe he's worth a thread on) keep pushing "THE COMMUNITY WANTS THE WHISKERS" when it appears to be only a vocal minority that does and the artist itself decided to not add them.
So far, a number of the Twitter users having participated in the discussion are still pushing to add the whiskers back in against the will of the original artist, claiming it is "part of her core design" - when the artist decided they weren't needed (talk about core design) and, most importantly, you can barely see a character's face, let alone face marking, in-game without zooming in as much as possible.
The Star Guardian skins, including Star Guardian Ahri, release in early September, giving us plenty of time for the salt to grow in the meantime and manchildren to sperg out over how important some barely-visible facepaint is so important to a video game character.
