I'm mildly interested in watching Enterprise right now (I know que the lobotomy). But to anyone who's actually watched Enterprise what did you think of it compared to series's like Voyager?

I know it couldn't hold a candle to TNG but I tended to feel Voyager had it's moments (see the linked video above). But from what I've heard nobody likes Enterprise.

While my own advice is to seek out SFdebris' reviews of Enterprise to get a good overview, I am aware that doing so would be the 40th time I have sperged about SFdebris, so instead I will give my own opinion.

Take the most idiotic writing from the worst of Voyager, the most sanctimonious smugness of early Next Generation, and the most inept attempts at "fanservice" from season 3 of TOS and you have something like enterprise. The characters are all (aside from the British guy) utterly pointless, unlikable, and fucking tedious from the insane and inept captain to the smug and irritating vulkan to the Deliverence redneck reject.

Honestly the only thing the series was good for was setting up a later joke in the 2009 movie about how "Admiral Archer" continued his insane idiocy by lending his dog to scotty for an experiment and then banishing him to the edge of the universe when it disappeared

Start with Dear Doctor. If you still want to watch the show after that...you're have no standards.

I recommend "Trekkies" if you want to learn about the people in the fandom. It was made in the mid-90's and they made a sequel 10 years later.

There's a scene in Trekkies where they talk about erotic fanfiction. Yes, even in mid-90's there were people who did slash fiction.

Are there at least a few moments where Capt. Archer says something like, "Crew, it's time to take a leap into the unknown: a quantum leap. ;) " ?

DS9 is my favorite Star Trek, and I think my reasons for this can be fairly succinctly summed up with the episode In The Pale Moonlight. The characters in the DS9 Federation have to work for their utopia, they don't get it handed to them by plot contrivances. When someone in DS9 is forced to make a difficult moral choice, something doesn't show up at zero hour to negate any consequences and vindicate them.

Also rather than faffing about through space meeting new alien races and getting a shallow cursory examination of them, we get a stationary setting that focuses on a few key aliens (Cardassians, Bajorans, Klingons, Ferengi, and Trill for the most part, with some Romulans and Dominion species in there as well). That allows them to do a great deal more world building and present much more fully realized alien species, instead of Forehead Bump Gimmick Species #812 ("they speak backwards and hate cats!")

Basically I like it because I'm a big nerd and care more about the Star Trek universe than any given story being told therein. It's also why I couldn't give less of a shit about the new "Action Star Trek".

Usually when I watch a Trek episode it's a rerun that happens to be on TV (TOS or TNG) and I watch it as a stand-alone episode. I've also downloaded a couple of Voyager, Enterprise, and DS9 episodes and watched them this way.

I'm curious, though: it seems like DS9 is more story arc-oriented, so would it be best to watch it from the beginning all the way through rather than random episodes out of sequence?

Yes. This. This is usually what I recommend to people who like Star Trek but dislike DS9. People are used to being able to just watch random stuff, but DS9 is trying very hard to be Babylon 5 so it's heavily into story arc.

I have to wonder if Jonathan Frakes took any pleasure in this scene.

That's how I generally act toward the minorities who work under me too.

Michael Dorn has watched this video and thought it was hilarious.

It's funny since in a lot of these instances Worf was right.

I watched the entire run in order on DVD. Things like Sci-Fi Debris can help filter though some of the worse episodes. That's what I would recommend.

How Picard negotiates

Interestingly enough, apparently Picard wiping dust off the USS Enterprise plaque was adlibbed. It wasn't written in the script.

I just watched the pilot episode of Deep Space 9

Thus far I really like Sisko, so I'll keep watching. It seems interesting thus far.

Loads of bad things and events in general seems to occur to Harry Kim in Star Trek: Voyager. Harry Kim seems to be the opposite of a Mary Sue (the term which also originated from Star Trek fanfic). He never gets any promotions, almost dies in more than a few episodes (does die in at least one), gets stuck in at least two different timelines, and his romantic relationships never ever work out (one was with a hologram).

I know this thread is old but there are no other Star Trek threads.

And worst of all, he had the "privilege" of starring in Voyager instead of DS9.

Harry Kim is one of the most hated Star Trek characters.

Not so much Mary Sueishness. But that he's a really dull character, and I think was actually miscast. Whenever an episode focused on him it was usually a lot of very generic soap opera style acting between the characters.

He's not as hated as Neelix but is easily one of the worst parts of Voyager for me.
