Harry Kim is one of the most hated Star Trek characters.

Not so much Mary Sueishness. But that he's a really dull character, and I think was actually miscast. Whenever an episode focused on him it was usually a lot of very generic soap opera style acting between the characters.

He's not as hated as Neelix but is easily one of the worst parts of Voyager for me.

It is fun to watch all the bad things happen to him. He kind of reminds me of Wesley Crusher sans everything working out his way.

Harry is OK, I think there are a lot of other characters who were far worse. At least Harry did stuff and was generally likable. Plus there's that one Benjamin Button episode where he marries the daughter of Kes and Tom and has that freaky grandchild.

According to TVTropes Harry was originally supposed to be killed off part way through the series, and he was supposed to be replaced with Seven of Nine. But his actor at the time was voted one of the Sexiest Men Alive in 1997 so they killed off Neelix's girlfriend instead.

All the proof you ever need that Voyagers writers suck balls.

This. The most unforgivable sin in television is to be dull. Rather irritating than dull. You have to make the audience feel something. Harry Kim was like a Charisma black hole, he just sucked all the energy out of the scene every time he opened his mouth.

I have to say that I hate Dr. Pulaski from Star Trek: TNG. She is really dull and is no more than an actress doing a bad Dr. McCoy impression. I understand that's what the writers were going for when they created her but it is awful nonetheless. I am so glad that Beverly Crusher was brought back.

I can't enjoy Star Trek in quite the same way since I read Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. They're set in a similar kind of universe, where technology is so advanced that there's no longer any scarcity, and so exploration and self-improvement are the standard way of life. Except that unlike Gene Roddenberry's version of the future, the people of the Culture are as emotionally-driven as in the present day. Whereas the Federation's Prime Directive is not to interfere with the development of the species, the Culture's is "Don't fuck with the Culture."

I've been a Star Trek fan since 1987. Have fond memories of TNG when I was 4, as well as TOS. Love DS9, but the franchise ended there as far as I'm concerned. Voyager was a wasted opportunity, as was Enterprise. I say this as someone who gave both a fair shake before writing them off. Nothing wrong with the acting. The writing was just really bad on both.

You know what...

I don't hate Enterprise.

I sat down and watched the whole series over the last few days and its not god-awfull like I was told. Its not good like TNG but its a solid story and while pretty campy its still fun to watch.

There I said it!
