Star Wars vs Star Trek - Which is better?

With the new Star Wars movie coming out it brings up the age old question of whether Star Wars or Star Trek is better.

The obvious answer seems to be Star Trek but I realize not everyone is intelligent enough to appreciate it and prefers the childish simplicity of Star Wars. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, I suppose.

Obviously 40k doesn't apply because that's not fair.

Well you really nailed it in your post. Star trek is far better and there's not really a decent argument otherwise. Star wars is just children's movies, they are fun to watch but don't have much content to them. Also Disney is milking the fuck out of that cash cow for the next decade at least.

But seriously, Star Trek is a better look at the time when it was made -- TOS Star Trek reflects 60s issues, for example. It also has a greater sense of optimism for the future and human nature, and revolves around exploring the unknown. The Star Wars galaxy seems pretty much unchanged for thousands of years.

To me the original trek series looks almost jokingly dated. I've never really understood the adoration for star wars, as far as Sci fi it's not even in my top ten, and other then Darth Vader who is probably one of the best movie villains, there's not much great in the movies. Trek was about mankind's future and our destiny (I mean just Data's quest to be human had more storytelling in it then in any star wars plot or story), star wars was two dudes swinging flash lights at each other.

I re-watched some Star Trek TOS on Netflix and I love how cheesy it all is. Plus the weird interior version of greebling they did with random pipe fittings stuck to the walls and painted bright colours.
I think TNG has aged pretty well considering. Update the visual effects shots for the exterior stuff and it'd still stand up to scrutiny now.

Star wars is turning into pure shit, and selling out under the mouse. Trek has thrown away all the ideas that made it decent and enjoyable to push for progressiveness and slapped their name on shitty action movies so the everyman can get in on "geek" culture. While shitting on canon.

So now, clearly 40k is best. Because I love emperor 5ever, because 5 is more than 4.

Well, I kinda agree and disagree, look at DS9 and TNG ran the same time. Vastly different shows, themes etc.

Didn't DS9 start late in TNG's run and continue for awhile after?

I think TNG has aged pretty well considering.

TOS seems like "the 60s in the future." TNG still seems like it could be in the 24th century, despite being a product of the late 80s to early 90s.

That is correct, TNG was winding down when DS9 started if memory serves only one season after. Still as far as era's it's same time table unlike the newest show and TOS.

TNG has aged well, but the main point for that I think is the cast. Honestly in the history of TV can you pick a better one? Everyone was great, and written well. TNG also had the problem of the week mindset vs DS9's long story arc. I think just by nature of the weeks tend to age better (TOS did that too and TNG had some back round long stories)

TOS space kinda felt rag tag, I guess that was in at the time where the latter series it's seen as another ave of life. (ds9 showing seedy undersides while TNG makes it all seem clean and pretty)
