I really want to get into this game. The Harvest Moon series were some of my favorite games as a kid, and I still play Harvest Moon 64 and Magical Melody every once in a while. The new ones haven't interested me as much. This looks like a return to form, and its success helps assuage any doubt I'd love it.

You definitely want to wait then. From what I've seen, this is one of those "suddenly been playing for hours" type of games. Highly addicting
For the love of GOD wait. It's a game in which you will sit through a four hour season quite happily doing shit and then wonder where all the time went.
Its a gorgeous, addictive game that's very popular because it's so basic and beautiful.
According to the creator's twitter, he wants do some ports and add new things like the chance to marry Shane and Emily.
I've had a lot of fun with it. I'd been following it's development for like, a year and a half! Glad it met my expectations...

I don't think the people are quite spazzy enough to actually warrant a thread. Maybe there'll be a few nutters here and there, but from what I've seen, the fanbase is remarkably tame.
Then again, I could be wrong.
You know, I guess I don't know what to compare it to because while I play games, generally I don't mod or keep up with the fan shit. When I have modded games, Starbound and Skyrim, I was unprepared for all the crazy porn-modding that was going on. So, when everybody on the subreddit was sperging about making certain people romanceable, adding polyamory and swapping in anime portraits for the characters, I thought "how long until this gets really weird?"
But like I said, I'm a bit of an outsider to game fandom stuff.

Yeah, you can have gay relationships in it. And then adopt a baby if you want a kid.

Yeah, every marriage candidate can be romanced by the same sex. I like how low key it is, personally, and it doesn't feel like pandering or shooting for progressive points. All the events and most of the dialogue is the same for either sex.
A few of my friends say there's already TC's that turn it into some bizarre porn studio simulator, nude mods, and exactly what you'd expect from a game like this.
