I like playing Rust and I just bought Reign of Kings. I really hope these games last a while. I also bought DayZ but I never play that because of "teleporting" zombies. What Early Access games do you play?

I've bought Broforce, Serious Sam Revolution, Wrack, and Rust, and I was disappointed by the latter two. I'm also never buying an Early Access game again. A lot of developers using Early Access have the tendency to take the money and run, leaving the game eternally unfinished. I think I read something about Valve doing some things to try and prevent this kind of crap from happening, but I'm not sure how effective it is. Luckily, I haven't bought any games by developers that pulled this, and I don't wanna start now.

I presently play Viscera Cleanup Detail which is a choice game if you suffer from OCD.

Also picked up Besiege after seeing a few gifs of it about a month ago. Already cleared the available maps, but occasionally fire it up if I have time to kill.

There is Starbound. It's the only early access game I own and I feel for what it is worth, kinda worth the $15 I spent a few years back. I honestly do hope the devs release another patch to show that they are working on the game and aren't just trying to sucker people in for more money, especially with all the controversy they have generated.

Tabletop Simulator, I think, is the only Early Access game I have. I loved the concept and the community is crazy active. However, for reasons mentioned above, I tend to stay away from those games.

I played Minecraft in it's very early days (I still play it because I am supreme autism) but that doesn't really count because it wasn't on steam

I feel the same way. I played it at its earliest stage when it was first released, and had enough fun in that alone to justify the $15. Now I'm waiting on it to be in final release (either that or in some sort of permanent beta limbo with no more updates) so I'm not bored of it by the time it's done.

Invisible Inc. is currently in EA and it's shaping up really well. Darkest Dungeon needs more content, but the core seems solid.

I also bought Sunless Sea and Endless Legend. They turned out super well.

I generally avoid early access because I think it encourages really shitty business practices. Given options though, Darkest Dungeon and Killing Floor 2 when it shows up in a few days.

That's a pretty common criticism I hear, but I can't really say I've ever regretted any of my EA purchases (which is a lot more than I can say for some of the Kickstarter projects I've backed).

There's obviously a lot of terrible vaporware bullshit on EA, but Steam in general just has an underbelly of awful games now, and you can tell which developers actually have some idea what they're doing.

Dragon Age 2 was the first real big EA disappointment I've had, and a big reason why I've yet to play any of their games upon release.

Steam early access is one thing but Greenlight was created specifically to address the criticism that indie developers needed to get a publisher in order to get on the service. Which disqualified the vast majority of indie developers to sell their games on the most popular digital distributor. Adding to that games could get rejected for any number of reasons Steam wasn't at liberty to disclose.

Gabe Newell has stated Greenlight wasn't good enough and has stated they've considered moving toward a self publishing system. Overall you'll always have terrible games regardless of what store sells them. This was the case long before Steam. What's most important is not buying a game just purely based on marketing. Considering how almost every PC game launches broken nowadays it's extremely important to wait until the game functions before buying it. (and yes Origin has it's share of broken games at launch)

I played Darkest Dungeon up to where Early Access finished. It feels like a really full game already that's given me about 75c/hour of game time, so if you're into crawlers it's definitely worth picking up - it's easily a complete game now at $20, which is steep for early access, but it's very well done.

The art style really gets me too, really gorgeous.

Also if anyone has played the game, here's a screenshot illustrating my completionist sperg for the game. I really didn't find it as difficult as other crawlers, so the learning curve isn't as steep - good for anyone who ragequits other similar games.

My only problem with Darkest Dungeon is that if a you wipe with a high level party, you're kind of screwed. If the dungeons have already leveled up, then you don't have many level 1 missions you can use to train some rookies with.
