I hate that Hunger Games, and other such mediocre YA is being talked about more than Stephen Baxter. Sure, his works may not have been perfect, but they had amazing characterization and a fascinating basis in real science (as well as delightfully insane pseudoscience that is basically magic). He also doesn't let science get too overbearing, so that a more general audience can understand his works (at least, from what I've seen of the Manifold series, and the Xeelee Sequence).

What do you think about this man and his collective works?

I've read the Flood series, and the Northlands trilogy and greatly enjoyed them. Especially Ark, that was a really cool read. It didn't hit you over the head with science but still kept it real. Flood was a more exciting read and had a more richly imagined setting. It's the difference between having a whole world to play in and confining yourself to one small ship. Never read any of his YA stuff because I'm an adult who reads adult books, and YA is a trash bin of bad writing.

The only Baxter I've read have been the Long Earth books with Terry Pratchett. I have been thinking of looking at his stuff, where would be a good place to start?

Exultant was my starting point into the Xeelee Sequence and into Stephen Baxter as a whole. I personally recommend it as a Baxter starting point.
