I love this guy's channel. I am honestly surprised he has not gotten botulism yet.
Steve just did a WW2 vintage "Army Air Force Aircrew Lunch" in a very snifty looking for the time case which pops up and opens top and bottom to let out either loose candy or chocolate bars respectively. This candy with nuts has been air-exposed for 80 FUCKING YEARS and looks every bit as gnarly as you would expect it to, but he eats every last morsel.
Mind you, he paid $300+ for it, so I guess you want to get your money's worth.

He has! Before he even started the channel he ate a Ukrainian ration that, ironically, wasn't expired and he caught the botulism and was hospitalized. Clearly, he managed to pull through and he started the channel not long after that.
Most preppers and semi-prepper types do a mix of both. Dehydrated camping food can keep for up to 20+ years in proper storage, while civilian MREs can only keep for 3-5 years depending on storage temperatures. However, MREs require minimal additional materials and gear (the flameless heating element I've got in my MREs only requires a small quantity of water to activate, and if you're desperate you can eat the entree cold).
I guess it's all down to how far you want to plan ahead and for what contingencies.
Love this man. He has so many cool facts about the MREs (especially the ww2/Korea and Nam ones) that I just haven’t heard about and hot damn that voice makes it even better.
The amount of 75+ year old food this man has eaten is incredible. Also, I can't think of a video he's ever released that's been bad. One of the best channels out there, in my opinion.
So many YouTube "Food Reviewers" could learn a lot from this man. Never heard of him or his channel before this thread but I'm pretty damn impressed by it. He's not a lolcow at all but he sure is obsessed / knowledgeable with wartime rations.

I think that's what keeps people coming back. Let's be honest; after dealing with lolcows and assorted speds, listening to Steve's soothing voice as he opens up something that... sorta qualifies as food? It's a welcome balm.

Though he dropped the MREinfo part a while back now. It's a memory so strong I usually stutter half a second changing from MREinfo and instead jumping right into the "Hope you liked the video...." bit.

Fuckin AWESOME, I love the WW2 era stuff best of all. And you KNOW that even if he dosen't test out the included benzedrine tabs on the WW2-Vietnam era escape-evasion kits on-cam, that he's tweaking like a motherfucker off camera.

Ya'll watch this guy? He's awesome. Eats old ass MREs on Youtube and cracks open some really neat retro stuff and old survival packs. He has several catch phrases including "let's get this on a tray, nice" and "good hiss" (when he cracks open a well preserved vacuum seal).
He writes his own music as well for the videos.

I watch his stuff. He generally keeps things upbeat and has nice things to say even when he's eating the vomlette and the four fingers of death.
I guess it's because reviews where he just goes "ewwww ewwww" the whole time wouldn't be entertaining.

I like how he optimistically describes taking what is essentially meth would keep your spirits upbeat in a survival situation along with the little packets of choco bars the Air Force included. Meth + choco obviously critical in any survival situation. I think the Air Force might be right.
