I am not a lawyer and I don't know which laws would apply here (Bardfinn is in Texas, and I have no idea about their laws), but based on what I've read about the "Shitty Media Men blacklist case", I personally do think a similar case could be made against for example Masstagger, one of the public blacklists that Bardfinn has synchronized with his own (which is not private), because Masstagger makes the people that have been targeted public by virtue of the way the program is designed - it's specifically designed to openly smear Redditors for being "Natsees" and "white supremacists", it's literally places a swastika with a stop sign superimposed next to your alias, suggesting you're a "Natsee" that needs to be stopped from participating in other subreddits. The problem is that most Redditors post on Reddit under an alias, not their real name, so you cannot argue defamation when it's an alias that cannot be traced back to a real person. But anyone who has been added to the Masstagger blacklist under their real name, I don't see why they couldn't go the route of the plaintiff in the Shitty Media Men blacklist case. Especially if they are European, because Masstagger by design violates the GDPR. This is also true for example for Shinigamy Eyes (another TRA blacklist program), and the fact that Shinigami Eyes violates the GDPR was openly discussed on its Github page at the time. (I don't know if that discussion thread is still there but I recall a German Shinigami Eyes user pointing out that the plugin violates the GDPR and he didn't feel it was ethical to keep on using it for that reason. Not because it smears innocent and unassuming people, but just because of the GDPR, mind you.)

I am guessing the story about retiring early with a patent is just some bullcrap he put out to hide the more likely story, which would be that he can no longer obtain gainful employment as a database programmer (the only thing he seems to be capable of) because of his criminal record. A lot of database programming or database maintenance jobs require one to work with sensitive/private data, and hence require their database employees to have impecable records with no criminal priors. Rather than admit the truth ("I can no longer work as a database programmer because I have a criminal record for being a violent asshole and employees don't wanna fuck with that") he invented the story about being a genius comp-sci PhD engineer who retired early with a highly lucrative patent that doesn't seem to exist.
