I wasn't sure where to stick this at, but thought it was of some interest to highlight someplace, but within a week, a piece of animation production software highly utlized by famliar studios like Ghibli for the past 20+ years is finally getting an open source release to the public. It'll be called "OpenToonz" and will feature many of the same tools as its former "Toonz" software along with modifications made by Studio Ghibli for their workflow.

I first learned Toonz way, way back in the early 2000's and how it was used by studios like Ghibli or Fox's brief stint in feature animation involving Don Bluth (Anastasia) as well as the classic TV series Futurama, so it's nice to see another "no excuse" app anyone can try if they want (though I'm sure certain people will never change).

Cool.

Wonder how it works.
Here's some vids, though these were for the regular Toonz Harlequin software, not sure if the same features are to be include in this open source version or not. Please mind the "Microsoft Sam" voice on these, I'm sure it was hard enough for an Italian firm to find anyone to read off this stuff fluently...

They got a few tutorials too...

Well it's finally out, here's the English page!
https://opentoonz.github.io/e/index.html

So far we get the main software (Win and Mac), a scanning tool developed by Ghibli themselves (Windows only) and plug-ins/SDK from Dwango. Manuals and other PDF's are in Japanese only at the moment.

@Trilby if that's the case, I'll probably hold off until the manuals and related materials are translated before getting the program.
I kinda suggested it could be the same as the manuals here if the functions are quite similar. At least it might come in handy for some to figure out, especially if someone familiar with Toonz would chime in what what they know.

Of course going here, it appears to be crashing for some users as well. I suppose these things would take time to sort out.
