Given the fact that the United States has over 200 million more firearms in circulation than any other country, it's not surprising that our public mass shooters would be more likely to arm themselves with multiple weapons than foreign offenders

If people want to reduce the number of mass shootings in the U.S., a good first step would be reducing the number of guns in circulation.

Big point here. The majority of mass shootings are caused by people with debilitating mental illnesses, like autism, so if we cull the population of autists we will have no more mass shootings. It's such a perfect plan!

I'd sooner go for more comprehensive mental health assistance than I would gun control, 'specially since the guy makes mention of personality and mental disorders (and some measure of entitlement, though I don't think I'd attribute it to the idea of the American Dream) being significant contributing factors to the shooters.

It's difficult to get hold of a gun in England, and we haven't had any school shootings since Dunblane, I think?

I also wonder why it's so easy for mentally ill/autistic people to get hold of guns in the US.

I'd also like to rant about police incompetence, particularly with regards to the Columbine shooting. The police were informed well in advance that Eric Harris was detonating home-made explosives in the neighborhood, and they were handed printouts of his website. It's been proven that a search warrant was issued but for some reason it wasn't put into use. I also think it's disgusting that a bunch of cops laid outside the school shitting their pants for hours instead of storming the school.

I made a facebook post suggesting that maybe we make it a little more difficult for crazy people to purchase guns (Jared Loughner, James Holmes, Dylan Roof, Adam Lanza, and that black dude all had guns purchased legally) and my family went nuts saying I was trying to take everyone's guns away.

So it would probably be easier for me family wise if we just shot the autistics. I'm totally on board for that.

I think more than gun control is needed. The US has over 300,000,000 million guns in circulation. That is a gun for every man, woman, and child just about. We have laws that are supposed control gun sales, but they are not implemented and we have special interests that severely reduce how effective these laws are with created loopholes or by hamstringing the people meant to enforce them. More guns means more of a chance of these weapons falling into the hands of those who would intentionally kill others. It is basic economics, more supply means more availability and in some cases less cost for would be killers.

I am still a realist and understand that we have a powerful political lobby that wants guns everywhere all the time. So there is another option, Reinstitutionalization.

It is not popular and it is not pretty, but the US's experiment with Deinstitutionalization has been an utter and abject failure. Since it was first implemented, crime and homelessness skyrocketed. There are people in this world that no one will ever care for and who are an obvious threat to themselves or others. These people have a very twisted sense of reality and have no business being out on their own. There are a significant number of people in the US who need to be placed back under protective custody of the state. They are often more than 1/3 of the homeless in US cities and 40% of the occupants of the US prison system. Personal Freedom means nothing if it allows a person to become a constant threat and a blight to others. I would argue that such freedom is excessive selfishness to a degree that is despicable.

There is a clear common thread in US mass shooters and attackers. A large portion of them should have been locked up in institutions and would have been 60 years ago.

we have only ever had 2 mass shootings that i know of

the second one, which is the one that resulted in our gun laws, is widely accepted by anyone with some form of intelligence as performed by the government for that purpose

im not a paranoid person, i believe what i can see for myself

as it is, in Melbourne it is incredibly easy to get your hands on illegal firearms

Australia had 13 mass shootings between 1979 and when gun control was implemented in 1996. There have been no incidents since. That is over 19 years without a single mass shooting.

Really, you are going to ask for a definition? As far as I know there is no official definition except lots of people killed in a setting at a single isolated moment.

Your odds of defending yourself in a setting like that when everyone is panicking is negligible. Besides if you are going to imply this is a conspiracy by the government to restrict who owns guns, I could be just as silly and imply that mass shootings are a conspiracy by gun manufacturers to make sure everyone buys their products out of fear. I mean the US has more mass shooting incidents than anyone else and many killers have had to purchase extended clips from the US in foreign countries to conduct their mass shootings.

There have been serial killings in Australia, but it is very hard to enter a crowded school or theater and slaughter people with just a knife or non-automatic pistol.
