You're a random crewman of a huge cargo spaceship, in a far-off future where most living humans have never even eaten food or consumed water that wasn't constructed entirely by a Star Trek replicator. Shit gets fucked up, the ship falls toward a planet, and - having escaped using a drop-pod - you find yourself in the middle of a seemingly endless ocean. There's nothing around you at all, save for the massive and smouldering remains of the cargo ship, visible in the distance. Turns out you can breathe the air. Turns out it's an ocean of water. Turns out there's a whole world underneath the surface, one which the contents of your drop-pod have left you just equipped enough to survive. Your immediate goal? Survive and study the planet until you're rescued.
I'd be doing this game a disservice to describe too much of what comes next, so I'll just put it like this - this is the most fun and interesting single-player survival game. Your stranding on this alien planet evolves organically over time into a compelling narrative with awesome twists and secrets abound. Underwater survival in this game is really fucking neat. The fauna is as often beautiful as it is terrifying. You build underwater bases to house your food-growing operations and your cache of useful tools and vehicles. You build vehicles best described as mechs and submarines to empower yourself and traverse the open ocean with confidence and speed. You build reactors over thermal vents to charge the batteries which power those vehicles and to provide necessary power to your base. And all the while, you enjoy an underwater world that's unlike much else in games today, a world where you're hardly the apex predator, and where a hole in the sea floor might be hiding natural wonders or otherworldly horrors that will have you delete this shit in a minute.
Check out a Twitch stream or some Youtube gameplay some time. If you're not a fan of survival games, then this one might not do much to get you interested, but it's uniquely accessible and uniquely polished compared to its peers, and it's 100% fresh.
