Subnautica Dev Fired Over 'Hateful' Statements

Subnautica’s sound designer Simon Chylinski has been fired following outcry over insensitive statements made on his Twitter account.

Subnautica is an underwater survival game full of eerie animal noises and a techno soundtrack. Over the weekend, fans of the game discovered a history of racially insensitive tweets and tweets critical of gender diversity on sound designer Chylinski’s account. The tweets appear to have been discovered following the resurfacing of a 2016 poll made by game director Charlie Cleveland. The poll asked if players would rather have the ability to “play as a woman” or have developer Unknown Worlds “improve [the] core game.” Cleveland subsequently deleted the poll, to which Chylinski had responded in 2016, “we need a ‘diversity’ slider in the options. It will make the character progessively [sic] darker more feminie [sic] and less sexy.” Cleveland called Chylinski’s behavior “trolling” on February 3 of this year.

Twitter users subsequently found many questionable statements in Chylinski’s Twitter feed, including tweets about immigration claiming “importing random ppl from the 3rd world is also importing 3rd world tier crime rates and IQ.” Another tweet mocked a poll on YouTube about gender diversity by referencing attack helicopters, a meme commonly used to make light of transgender issues. Other tweets make light of global pay inequalities between men and women, praise colonialism, or reference “SJW logic.” While some of these statements seem to be made at least in part as trolling, it was enough for Unknown Worlds to take action.

As of February 2, according to his Twitter feed, Chylinski had been working on a Subnautica expansion. Today he tweeted “So. I just got fired…” Game director Charlie Cleveland confirmed that Chylinski is no longer with developer Unknown Worlds, telling Kotaku, “Over the weekend we discovered that one of our team members had made many hateful statements online that are against our company values. After discussing the matter with him, we decided to stop working with him immediately.”

Subnautica has been positively received since its release from early access. The sound in particular has been praised by players. Sea creatures all have distinct sounds, and the soundtrack changes depending on which area of the game players are in. Given this, it’s easy to see why many fans were disappointed by this behavior from a member of the development team. The game’s development team also drew political attention in 2016 when Cleveland explained that he wouldn’t be adding guns to the game as a statement againstgun violence.

And no wonder why I respect very few indie devs. They let the egotism from their fame get to their heads and think it okay to use their forums or what-have-you as a soapbox for their political views and expect their fans to immediately conform to them, like that. The games industry would be a lot quieter in this regard if people would just adopt a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" route for their political opinions.

Looking through one of the threads, I'm disappointed there were so many private profiles. It was interesting to see a correlation between

Not owning the game -> praising the developers for their leftist believes and kicking out 'wrong-think'

The ones who thought this was a waste of time soapboxing politics on their product were the ones with weeks' worth of playtime. No real surprise there, of course.

He made the joke of sexually identifying as an attack helicopter on Twitter, and had differing views and opinions in the political/race spectrum of things from the decision makers in the dev team. Ninja'd by Prof tho. But yeah, the whole thing's exceptional.

Best part is, the sound designer fired? Rational, level headed. Taking this in stride from some tweets of his I saw. I hope he finds more work.

It sucks because Subnautica is a really good game, best game I've played in VR--but I'm still going to give them a negative review. Oh well, next game they release I'll just pirate it, no biggie. They said stupid shit about guns, which is fine, whatever, they're entitled to their opinion, and it is a great game anyway, but clearly I should have made an autistic stink about that since they're willing to fire an employee over it. The tolerance simply doesn't go both ways. Employee was kind of dumb letting himself be doxxable and express a conservative opinion while 1) working in San Fran and 2) having to know his employers were assholes.

More evidence that the entire city of San Francisco should be put to death, though (the devs are yet another faggoty SF company). I really wish conservatives would start realize that if they don't start sandbagging and excluding the left the way the left does to the right, they're going to be fucked in the future.

I imagine he still wants to work in the city again so he has to play nice. It's a shitty insular place from my understanding. Gonna be hard to get work in tech coming out as a conservative though. Look what they did to Palmer Luckey. Luckelily ( haw haw) for Palmer he had fuck you money and the drive to start up his own stuff.

I feel like the inevitable conclusion of all this is hiring token conservatives; every firm will have a token black guy, token woman, and token conservative, thus warding off any and all criticism for shitty business practices. What a world.

Hah, far from it. The token woman, black, etc, is their idea of fighting conservatives. They don't want a token conservative. They put all their fears and hatred into the effigy of the conservative in their head. They want to pathologize conservativism (in all its forms) completely and utterly. Schools are starting to punish children for saying mainstream conservative things. People getting fired (like in this case or Damore's).

Humanity, deep down, must have some sort of death wish or desire for self-annhiliation. I cannot understand why the people that have benefited most from capitalism, free trade, and entrepreneurship are so fucking hostile to the system they justly and fairly succeeded in. Even those that relied on freedom of speech the most to dissent are those that currently most loathe it. You see these big titans of tech or just general software companies almost promote socialism. They are certainly receptive to it and go out of their way to hire and protect people that are sympathetic to those views. Damore, for instance, basically made an argument that a lawyer would have made in court towards Google's hiring practices regarding a lawsuit they are in for alleged wage discrimination. Damore claimed Google wasn't really discriminating, he was basically defending the company, and they fired him for it. These people desire their own annhilation so bad it's disturbing. These people are trying to manufacture a new normal, restructing society, and they want to do it in a way that is absolutely destructive not only to others but themselvees.
