Successful Sperg "Artists" - CWC's Dream Come True

Found this gem today, the creator of "Laser Beak Man," Tim Sharp. Mr. Sharp, who hails from the land down undah, has a decent parent (whom he still lives with, of course), and doesn't seem to have the horribleness of a CWC. THAT being said, his "art" is rubbish and, because he is a sperg, he has reaped many, many bennies that normal, talented artists, would never even dream of. For example: (1) he has an animated series which airs on Aussie public TV; (2) he was nominated for Young Australian of the Year; (3) he has given a TED Talk . . . with his mum, of course; (4) he has had an exhibit in the National Museum of Australia; and (5) a film about him was shown at the Met in NYC.

He loves bad puns - see "50 Shades of Gray" and the "Virgin Mobile" in the video linked below. He also has a "Laser Beak Man" doll he (or, likely his mum) made.

All of this shit and accolades would blow CWC's mind . . . although, I'm sure he thinks he'd deserve all of this and more.

The vid:

The Virgin Mobil/Mobile (note the semi-nude women floating above LBM's bed while he leers at them and a tablet spewing rainbows). I'm getting a CWC vibe for sure.

Anyway, using this as a "CWC Dream" thread rather than to expressly hate on seemingly "well-adjusted" spergs . . . whatever that may be. Anyone else know of other spergs who have "made it" in the art world?

I dunno, even though Tim Sharp's art looks childish and weird, there's something about it that kind of makes it... work.
Yeah, I think it's okay. Not my thing, but I can see how it would appeal. Some of his humour has that "So stupid it's brilliant" feel, like you get when a kid tells you a joke.

Anyway, my nomination is Louis Wain. If you've not heard of him, he was a British artist active in the early twentieth century who was famous for two things. One was his cartoon cats:
wain21.jpg
... and the other was for going completely batshit insane and dying in a lunatic asylum.

From about 1910, his cartoon cats became hugely popular and he made a lot of money out of them. But as with all fads, it died down. Wain proved to be a bit of a one-trick pony and found himself living in poverty, drawing quick cartoons just to pay his bills. The situation was worsened by his advancing mental illness, which led to violent outbursts and ultimately got him committed.

The diagnosis has changed over the years. Originally he was simply described as a "neuropath" (we wouild now say "neurotic"), then paranoid schizophrenic. There is now a theory that he was actually autistic.

I had to research Wain's life for a play once, and a lot of the details make sense with an autism diagnosis. He was academically uninterested and socially awkward, his mode of speech was described as strange and he tended to be kind of naive, often getting fleeced by business partners. He got on with cats better than people, to the point of obsession - he wouldn't shut up about the damn things, and was uninterested in drawing anything else. He couldn't quite deal with the fact that people can only take so many amusing pictures of cats playing cricket.

So I guess he could be called a successful sperg artist, albeit we don't know for certain that he was a sperg, and he wasn't successful his whole life.

I remember seeing this newspiece about this high functioning African autist with a photographic memory who draws these incredibly detailed 360 degree panoramic city skyline sketches after just a single look around from the top of a tall building or helicopter. His mentally normal sister was selling this guy's work to big name galleries for a handsome sum.

Kinda reminds me of Joey Ahlbum's work for some reason, anyone who grew up watching Nickelodeon or Sesame Street may have seen his work before.

Perhaps he was ahead of his time to see any real potential for his cats? This one drawing alone would be perfect to see in animation for instance.

Nah, he's not really sperg if he has that kind of gift.

Don't mind me, just judging you!

I feel like my art historian told us that Wain started drawing the cats for his ill wife and when she passed away, his mental health just went to all shit and he would not stop drawing the cartoon cats until they became more erratic in form. He was sort of an art nouveau illustrator in my opinion, I enjoy his cats.
Neo-Nazi/ultraconservative furry shithead Jay Naylor makes over 118k+ a year drawing furry porn. If that's not proof you can be a successful sperg and also that art is dead, I don't know what is.
How do you manage to be an ultraconservative Nazi AND a furry? This killed me. Please bury me next to art. I used to try to tell myself that I should respect any artist who sells their work or at least makes art for enjoyment&business and woo woo woo. But its so painful sometimes.

Also, this total is inaccurate as of four days ago. As it's even higher currently.

Jay Naylor didn't cause the death of art, he's merely a symptom. His fan base goes to show how low the bar is set if you want to be a popufur. The non-issue is that furries like what they like, and that usually is generic furry art, and catering to the lowest common denominator of what appeals to furries is actually a good way to make money. if you aren't as good as AlectorFencor, the best way to reach acclaim in the furry fandom is either: Make weird niche fetish porn or have a style so bland and non-challenging that furries flock to it as they do to Naylor.

He did apparently receive some interest from a Hollywood producer, and went over to the USA. However, it turned out that the producer in question was a flake and nothing like as high-powered as he claimed.

The thing about his cats becoming more abstract is actually a myth - basically the way it started was that a collector found six undated canvases which depicted cats at varying stages of abstraction, from relatively realistic to "you can barely tell this is a cat or even a thing," and she assumed they went in order and provided an insight into his deteriorating mind. The thing is, this theory really doesn't hold up - abstract cats show up throughout Wain's career, and his fans think it's likely that he was influenced by the patterns on the textiles his dad sold. The really damning thing is that his signature is perfectly legible even on the craziest paintings, which torpedoes the theory that that was how he saw the world.

His actual later stuff, when he was in the asylum, tends to be more ethereal and fantasy-based. I've visited one of the hospitals where he was kept and it's fucking depressing, so I'm not surprised he got escapist.

The thing about his wife is true - he was already drawing cats, but his funny cartoon cats were something he did for her.
