You know how you go to a car dealer and have 10000 possible combinations of equipping your new purchase exactly to your liking, even if it is the most basic Ford? More affluent people can paint their Audi any imaginable color if the rainbow or fit their BMW with a custom interior. It only makes sense your arm candy should be customisable, too.

The problem in the nail girl's story is that both of them are bought in that this is a kind of real relationship and it's left them in an uncomfortable limbo. If it's a simple consumer-based transaction, then he would just move on to finding a SB that provides the aesthetic he's looking for rather than getting frustrated at the one he's picked and trying to change her - you don't bemoan your Ford for not feeling like a BMW.
