Survival Horror Thread: What game scares you the most? -

Ok so, I just finished Amnesia the Dark Descent and I gotta admit it was pretty damn terrifying, far more than any movie I have watched in ages. Then I got to wondering, are there really many survival horror games that are actually scary? personally I would say that out of the games I have played only amnesia, silent hill (before 4), slender, and some parts of dead space qualify as genuinely terrifying games. Aside from that I cant think of any survival horror that has actually gotten the "horror" part of their genre right.

But what is your opinion? What game makes your briefs all dirty and crapped with fear? and what upcoming survival horror games do you think will be awesome?

As a purist i have to say there hasn't been a single decent survival horror games on consoles this gen except Siren: Blood Curse, which is a remake of Forbidden Siren for the PS2 (which is much better and worth a look).

On a totally seperate note i've never understood why SH4 gets so much hate, i thought it was pretty good.

I normally consider myself to be unflappable, but I'm a serious pansy when it comes to horror games. I don't scream or anything, but I end up ridiculously high-strung and jumpy because I hate jump scares and I expect one every second.

I don't really play much survival horror games, but if I were to say which game sacred me the most, it would have to be Silent Hill for the PS1. Even with the lights on and the sound on mute, I can't help but feel like I have a feeling with in my spine that says some kind of scary creature is going to appear and kill Harry.

Indeed. If you ever walk the streets of Pripyat at night or go through one of the X-Labs, then you will feel like you drop a chocolate cinderblock if you aren't staying alert when a bloodsucker or a chimera starts attacking you.

I got the original Clock Tower for the SNES as a rom on my computer a while back. 16-bit graphics today are not really 'scary', but I felt that game did a good job at the 'jumpy' type of horror with the scissor man.

Dead Space was good too.

I hold a special place in my heart for The Suffering. But then I've always been a fan of "Man seeking redemption/understanding of his past" games. It wasn't exactly scary, but the part where you are walking through the prison cemetery and hear the voices of the dead was...unsettling.

"I didn't do it..."

"The judge was in the klan..."

"I can't breathe..."

"I can feel the ants..."

"Mom was there. I told her not to come..."

Then you come to your own grave, waiting for the execution that wasn't, with the ghosts of your ex wife and two sons standing around it.

"This was your life T. How could you let this happen?"

Titanic: Adventure Out of Time scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Just the way the characters were animated, and how they'd pop outta nowhere. And kill you, occasionally.

I just picked up Silent Hill: Downpour for cheap. I heard this game was underrated. I will let you all know if it's scary enough to make my briefs dirty and crapped.

I've actually never played a survival horror game. Either that, or I just didn't think any of them were scary. I played a bit of Amnesia and was unfazed.

I really liked Amnesia. It's different.

- There are no weapons. There is no combat. (You hide, or distract it, or just run).

- Things don't jump out at you. (You know they're coming, which is worse.)

That is some original thinking in today's vast game design wasteland.

By a strange coincidence unrelated to this thread, I picked it up again last night for the first time in probably a year. There's a pretty good homebrew expansion campaign out and I wanted to give it a look. I hadn't ever run Amnesia on this computer (which has been up for maybe a week) and WOW I'd forgotten how good it is. It seamlessly started running at the native 5760x1080 (three monitors) and looked flat-out gorgeous. Late at night with the lights off, crank up the surround sound and HANG ON TO YER SHORTS.

The sequel, A Machine For Pigs, is due out "sometime this year" and I'll pick it up if I can get it for nothing on Steam. I think I paid ten bucks to preorder The Dark Descent.

I got good ol' PS1 Silent Hill right when it came out. At the time, it was the scariest thing I'd ever played. After being eaten by zombies for a while the first night, I gave up and went to bed, leaving it in the hands of my roomdog and my girlfriend -- came downstairs several hours later and they were still up, white-knuckled and glued to the edge of the couch.

Silent Hill still holds the title for "Worst Voiceovers In The History of History," but it was scary nonetheless.

If there's one thing Silent Hill does a good job of doing, it's having a creepy soundtrack.

Fatal Frame 2 terrified me, but I'll be the first to admit I'm a huge sissy.
I love the Fatal Frame series but my favourite is 3, i think it's the fact that ghosts slowly start appearing in your house (i.e. your safe space) as the game's story progresses.

Carrier on the Dreamcast rustled my jimmies. On a side note: I saw some footage from Illbleed and it looked terrible. Why was that a thing?

There is, actually. It involves SCP-087, the Neverending Stairwell. Let me see if I can find it.
Edit: found it.
