Good/Bad news everyone System Shock 3 is coming

Otherside entertainment managed to get the rights to make a new System Game. For those of you who don't know, System Shock is one of the granddadies of the survival horror genre and the Bioshock games are the spiritual successors of System Shock. The license has been in legal limbo for well over a decade until Nightdrive entertainment managed to sort through the legal clusterfuck to make the games available for sale again.

Otherside Entertainment is a game studio that is specializing in rebooting old school game franchise, and they are also working on rebooting Ultima Underworld as well. There is very little available on the game as of this writing other then the fact that it is in production and there is weapon degregation.

I really hope they don't fuck this up and stay true to the original games.

I still need to play System Shock.

Should I play both games or just skip to 2?

For anyone looking to play SS2 check out the mods available here that fix bugs and exploits and improve the graphics a little.

I've only played System Shock 2, haven't gotten around to one yet, but you can still follow along even if you haven't played the first game. The opening of the second game explains what happened in the first.

From what I hear System Shock 2 is more accessible as the controls in System Shock 1 is clunkier. A little roughness is to be exepect as SS1 came out in 1994 but there are mods that helps address this. I've never played 1 so I can't vouch for how much of an issue this is, but if you are not much of a retrogamer then it wouldn't hurt to stick with 2 perhaps going back to 1 later if you want more.

ss2 is as close as you can get to a perfect single player game and it still holds up fine today.

ss1 is great too but much clunkier if you're used to modern conveniences like....mouselook

i don't think I've ever heard of these guys, which is good. i have more faith in complete unknowns over triple a companies

Considering the devs, Nightdive Studios, they have published some games on Steam such as Turok, SS2, and even Wizardry 8. Considering that, one could have more faith in them than Triple A devs provided they do at least focus on what made a game good and try to refine it than dumb things down to reach a "more accessible audience". Wouldn't want to see a SS3 that turns out to be nothing more than a COD knock-off or an FPS that tries to bog one down with things that can hinder or even ruin ones experience.

They're remaking the original too, aren't they?

Speaking of, I vastly prefer the original to number 2. I don't know why. I think I'm some kind of nut.

I'm predicting a by the books, mediocre reboot, but I'd like to be pleasantly surprised.

I also greatly prefer SS1 to 2. The first is an incredible game that's like nothing else out there, however, I did play with the mouse-look mod, so maybe it was harder to appreciate at launch.

wait, wasn't that a kickstarter? or am I confusing it with the SS2 remaster?
