At least 48 people were killed and dozens more injured when a train derailed inside a tunnel in Taiwan on Friday.

66 people had been sent to hospital, officials said, as the island faced its worst rail disaster in decades.

Taiwan's Red Cross said it was on the scene and helping to free passengers trapped in the crash.

"Our emergency services have been fully mobilized to rescue & assist the passengers & railway staff affected," Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said on Twitter.

"We will continue to do everything we can to ensure their safety in the wake of this heartbreaking incident."

The train had 8 carriages and was carrying around 350 people, the fire department said, thought to include many tourists and people heading home at the start of a long holiday weekend.

The express service traveling from the capital Taipei to the country's southeast coast came off the rails while part of it was inside a tunnel after apparently hitting a truck that had slid off a road from a nearby construction site.

The official Central News Agency said the truck was suspected to have slid off the sloping road into the path of the train as its handbrake had not been engaged. The fire department showed a picture of what appeared to be the truck's wreckage next to the derailed train.

"Our train crashed into a truck," one man said in a video on Taiwan television that showed pictures of the wreckage. "The truck came falling down."

Images of the crash scene show some carriages ripped apart from the impact, while others crumpled, hindering rescuers reaching passengers.

Photos showed passengers clambering over the sides of the train to safety as rescue efforts continued at the crash site north of Hualien in eastern Taiwan.

The accident came on the first day of the four-day Tomb Sweeping Festival, an annual religious festival when people travel to their hometowns for family gatherings and to worship at the graves of their ancestors.

Taiwan is a mountainous island where most of its 24 million people are squeezed onto flatlands along the northern and western coasts. The lightly populated east is popular with tourists, many of whom arrive along the coastal railway lines to avoid treacherous mountain roads.

The railway line from Taipei down the east coast is renowned for its tunnels and route that hugs the coast just north of Hualien where the crash occurred.

Taiwan's extensive rail system has undergone substantial upgrades in recent years, particularly with the addition of a high-speed line connecting the capital Taipei with cities to the south.

The state-owned railways are generally reliable and efficient, but have had a patchy safety record over the years.

In 2018, 18 people died and 175 were injured when a train derailed in the island's northeast. In 1981, 30 were killed in a collision in its north, while a train crash in 1991 killed 30.

Damn, in a tunnel too? Oof, April Fool's was yesterday.

RIP, probably the worst, or for the least one of the worst railway accidents in the recent decade.

FYI, another HSR crash I recall happened in Wenzhou, killing 42.
2011, year it happened.

Alright, 2013 this happened in Spain, killing 79:

1988, Germans underdelivered, 101.

Let's see if mainland China will be a new challenger for train crashes.

I agree, Taiwan is a train-wreck
While the safety record of Taiwan's rail lines say otherwise, a part of me sort of wonders if all these events involving Taiwan in short succession (Evergreen, that Indonesian refinery blowing up, now this) sort of makes me think that some 'other power' is probing for weaknesses and engaging in some sort of demoralization project in Taiwan.

One already happened in Wenzhou, killing 40. I linked the Wikipedia in the second post.
Again it was humans being stupid.

Taiwan is still #1
#1 deadliest train crash in Asia.

I don't think it's entirely their fault on this one... wasn't the crew 100% Indians?
There's also shit going on in Myanmar and as usual the USA/China boogieman is being brought up to play.

Taiwan? I think you mean China.
Sure if you think they're a province or something, most will disagree here, I don't give a shit about the autistic fights between two disgruntled relatives.

Not him, but yes. And its also held together by spit, bubble gum, and hopes and dreams in a lot of places. You see, infrastructure is the sort of thing that decays slowly but inevitably. So politicians love to fund as little maintenance as they can since its a mostly invisible problem. And so things end up slowly degrading year after year, with only the most essential fixes applied as the politicians spend the money on stuff to buy votes with. Eventually you end up with the NYC subway system, which used to be the envy of the world but is now a rat-infested mess that's so far gone the whole damn thing needs to be completely replaced because the rot and decay keeps spreading as soon as something's replaced. As you can probably imagine, both NYC and NY state want the Feds to foot the bill. And its a big bill.
