Let me privilege you and give you an exclusive revelation that will silence most of my blind critics and prove my neutrality.

As far as the story and plot is concerned, I actually don’t think free is all that bad of a series. I’ve only seen about 4 episodes but fundamentally speaking its not that bad. I even think theres a good message in there about not conforming and being yourself and blah blah blah.

However despite that, the problem with free is not the plot, its the packaging. This is a very difficult psychological concept to explain briefly in an ask but I’ll try to give you an example.

I truly do mean this, strike witches was one of the best series to illustrate the power of friendship theme. I generally enjoy most anime, but not many can actually be touching to me and make me feel positive and optimistic and not view humanity as the shit hole that it is. After watching strike witches final episode and see all the friends band together and fight to protect their land I was actually moved emotionally.

Now another obvious theme of strike witches, is completely nude 14 year old girls. Not just ecchi panty shots and boob jiggles, completely naked prepubescent girls every other episode often frolicking with each other touching parts and being ‘innocently’ perverted. Now everyone has an opinion on lolicon. Some say it doesnt make people pedophiles some say it encourages it. Some say it provides a safe outlet, some say it normalizes and makes mainstream pedophilia. I think strike witches is a really great story about friendship for all ages, even with the nudity. But there are others who will watch it and at the first sign of a naked adolescent anime character, classify the series as perverted hentai for sick perverts and pedos. And thats life people have different opinions. But here is what I can say about the influence of Japanese animation.

I didn’t grow up an anime fan aside from dragonball z on tv like alot of other people. Other than that I didn’t watch anything and it wasn’t until recently a couple years back that I even started watching anime and Japanese media as a hobby. Long story short if I am honest with myself, after watching hundreds of series my view on lolicon and skinship and nudity has all changed. Couple years back seeing a naked young looking anime girl I would think just as any other ‘normal’ person would. Some japanese parents (both male and female) take baths with their children all of their lives something westerners are appalled by and even I years ago would have been like….eh… The possession (not sale and distribution) of child pornography is not even illegal in Japan and the sale of it just became illegal 10 years or so ago due to western pressure and influence. Even now jr idols girls who are 7-15 years old are filmed in swimsuits, skimpy clothing, frolicking around with closeups of their parts and to my current knowledge is all still legal in Japan. Different cultures do different things whatever I don’t care. Most westerners would be outraged and shout abuse and pedophilia. Japanese people also have public bathes and many of them are mixed male and female (though there are fewer mixed ones in recent years) where everyone is naked and takes a baths together and even relax in hotsprings ALL ages. My point in all this is the influence of Japan has changed the way I think about these issues. Many people would argue me being ok or at least not bothered by lolicon, jr idols, skinship, and public baths makes me a disgusting pervert and pedophile. And all of this started with me watching strike witches, seeing passed the nudity and enjoying the touching story of friendship. (and again I mean that, I am the type that gets emotional with some anime even nartuo and gaara have given me some borderline man tears moments) Many people would have a problem with me saying so what if a father bathes with is 13 year old daughter and she washes his back. That doesn’t mean they’re fucking going to be fucking and they’re thinking about each other lustfully. But that is not an opinion that is shared by westerners though it perfectly fine over there but I would be ostracized here for even suggesting it. So the influence of the culture of Japan has made me think this way. If I posted a question comment here on tumblr probably 80% of the people would be freaked out and conclude anime has turned me into a pedo, all because of strike witches.

This is one of the two problems I have with free. Its not even the story, its the packaging. Strike witches has a great story but it was packaged with naked 14 year old girls which some say turn people into pedophiles. Ok fair enough, it is true my view has changed though I’m not a pedo. And I have a problem with the packaging of free and anime like it. You’re a fool if you don’t think you’re not influenced at all by the world around you and what you feed your eyes ears and soul and all of your decisions are completely your own. But besides the packaging problem I also take issue with the fact again that anime is taking a turn to make more series that cater to women and mens interests are always put 2nd to theirs and we don’t really have anything else that caters to us that we can enjoy, when women already have everything else in life. Those are my issues with free, not the story not the plot which I concede are not that bad so far and even people can learn good messages from. But a good message with bad packaging can be worse than no good message at all. Its like when they say when the gods bless you with something it is wholly good and pure. But when you receive enrichment from the darkness it always comes with a catch. If you sell your soul you might get a little good from it, but it end up being bad for you overall, in the end. The ;good; is just a selling point to dupe you into receiving the bad. I have a fundamental disagreement with the subliminal messaging of free just in the same way people would call me a pedophile for not being put off by watching a good story because of a naked anime a girl in it. Thats just how it is. Nobody gets to be completely happy in life.

I don't think he does. I'm also astounded that he seems to think Free! is one of the first anime to be aimed at women, while a good chunk of it is already, and it's been that way for a long time. The only difference is that this time there's less female support characters for him to perv on.

By "packaging", I think he refers to guys in swimwear running around. I think he sees it as wrong because it would doesn't arouse him unlike pedophilia/lolicon. As for Strike Witches, I don't know what that is aside from girls with air-plane parts. I can only assume it has fan service since its mentioned that he is a perv who would totally watch some unappealing looking anime show for the "story".
