I've always enjoyed trading card games. I like learning to play the games and I really enjoy the art on the cards. I've been into card games since I was a kid in 1993 / 1994. It started with Magic the Gathering for me and I've been hooked since. I've played and collected tons of tcgs over the years and have seen many come and go. Then video games started to run with the tcg genre which was awesome cause then I could play these games any time. Now there are a ton of TCGs and video game ccgs and I'd love to know what you guys enjoy and why.

Here's some of my favorites:
Physical TCG -
  • Magic the Gathering - I don't really get to play magic irl too much these days. I use to play it a lot as a kid in school and college.
  • Redemption - This game is based around the Christian bible but you don't need to be religious at all to enjoy the game. It's very strategic and pretty damn fun and unique. I still get to play this game often.
  • Pokemon TCG - I played it as a kid and occasionally play it with nieces / nephews, cousins' children and friend's kids. The cards I own are mostly from when I was a kid and the newer ones I have were purchased to unlock the digital counterparts in pokemon tcg online.
  • Star Wars CCG - I played this game as a kid, I still have most of my cards. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's long since discontinued.
  • Legend of the Five Rings - Another long dead game that I played as a kid.
Online CCG -
  • Hearthstone - Free to play. Pretty fun, very accessible and has a ton of content to play that isn't pvp. Fast match finding for ranked pvp. Has a pretty fun arena mode. Can get into playing it and ranked play without spending much money.
  • Eternal Card Game - Free to play. This one is one of my favorites. It plays very similar to Magic the Gathering. Fast match finding for ranked pvp play. Has a draft and arena modes of play. Has more playable content than hearthstone for single play. Ranked play will cost you some cash for current cards to excel.
  • Fable Fortune - Free to play. Plays a lot like hearth stone and has a lot less content. Game feels very rushed and not polished. Events are pretty boring and it lacks a lot of play modes.
  • MtG Arena - Free to play. It's online magic with quick pvp matching and a draft mode. It lacks a lot of the solo content that the other titles have and is missing the single player content that was present in Magic Duels and the Planeswalker titles. It also doesn't have Commander as a playmode which I feel would greatly enhance the game.
  • Pokemon Trading Card Game Online - Free to play. Prolly the most kid friendly Online TCG there is. Mostly because Pokemon's target audience is children. Game even allows you to trade cards making it an Online TCG vs all the others being Online CCGs. Lots of single player content, fast active pvp matching, daily tournaments and doesn't force you to spend a cent on digital cards. Most of the physical cards and sets made include codes for digital sets and booster packs.
Video Game CCG -
  • Magic the Gathering for Sega Dreamcast - Japan only release. Has a great story mode to play through and very nice art. It's basic magic with I believe Sixth Edition era cards. Controls very well.
  • Magic the Gathering 2012-2015 - PC. Known as the planeswalker series, these versions of magic had long story modes and tons of DLC. The controls can get a little bit annoying but you get use to them.
  • Pokemon Trading Card Game GB 1 & 2 - Basically a story mode version of the pokemon tcg on gameboy color. The second one was only released in japan but a fan translation was done for it in english. Both games can be played against another player via link cable. They contain the early pokemon card expansions. I believe the second game includes up to the Team Rocket cards. Both games have a couple special gameboy only cards in them as well. Controls are spot on.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh Legacy of the Duelist - PC / PS4. From what I understand, this is one of the favorite Yugioh games. It plays through the anime series and lets you play all of the duels in the shows. It also has an online pvp mode, but I've never played it so I can't comment on how quickly it will match for pvp. I was never really into Yugioh and never bought the physical cards or any of the other many video games. I picked this up during a psn sale for ps4 and played through the first couple story arcs. The controls can get rather annoying from asking if you wish to use trap or spell cards every single turn.
  • Card City Nights - PC / Mac / Steam OS - I got this game during a steam sale for a couple dollars. Very fun story driven single player ccg. Everything is earned in the game, no micro transactions. The game itself plays similar to the card game in FF8. The art work is silly and colorful for both the game and the cards. The controls are lovely and the difficulty is great. A sequel was made but I've yet to pick that up.
Hybrid Online CCG / RPGs -
  • Hand of the Gods - PC / PS4. Free to play and Hi-Rez's attempt to cash in on the Hearthstone fad, HotG is a Smite branded card game / tactical rpg hybrid. You create a deck of cards and then place them down like tactical rpg units. It's turn based and your avatar also has a hero power, similar to hearth stone. The goal is to destroy your enemies crystal shrine with your minions / spells. It's a pretty fun game and can be quite strategic...however. You're going to be spending a lot of money on cards. It's Hi-Rez, after all, and they're the king of micro transactions. You can't exactly pay to win, since you do need to know tactics on how to use your card units but it is highly predatory and they charge for everything they can including loot box skins and card backs. Packs of digital cards are loot boxes in their own rights, in the sense that you prolly won't get the cards for the class / hero you want but HotG takes it to a new level of greed.
  • Chronicle: RuneScape Legends - Now offline and no longer playable. PC. Free to play but pretty much abandoned by it's developers. Pvp matching is slow but it does still exist for the time being. The population is definitely dwindling down into nothing because the developers don't make any content for the game. The single player content in the game is quite fun but very lacking. Chronicle combines CCG deck building with a board game. You play 4 or 5 cards per round and place your cards along the enemies board. The enemy has to fight whatever you placed on their board. At the end, the two heroes fight each other in an automatic turn based event and the winner is the one standing. It's a really interesting concept that could have really been great if the developers spent a little more time and effort into making more content.
What are some of your favorite games? What would you recommend trying out? What do you still play with physical decks? What do you play digitally? What's your favorite card art? Post it all here.

There's also the ancient M:tG windows game. I keep that around for when I have an itch to play. Its AI totally has no clue what to do with Mishra's Factorys or any other cards that are heavy on the fuzzy logic, but it's good enough for me to have fun beating up on a computer at a card game

Android: Netrunner is worth checking out if you like asymmetrical games, played it a while but lost interest when they started out rotating out the old sets. Never played the original Netrunner. Sadly it will be discontinued next month. They did the living card game thing where you just bought the full expansion for a fair price and got a playset of each card instead of having to buy boosters, which is way better as a consumer, but I guess not as lucrative.

Video Games
-
  • SNK Vs Capcom - Card Fighters Clash / Neo Geo Pocket Color - simple game mechanics plus colorful card art make for a pleasant time

  • Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses / PS2 - with 682 3D battle/death/victory/idle animations I'm surprised this one doesn't get more love. Computer opponents differ in behavior as well unlike most other games where opponents are just a reskin of the same AI going for the best move available

  • Digimon Digital Card Battle / PS1 - Rock. paper. scissors battle system so outcomes aren't always certain. Mix in a few support cards for favorable odds. Another card game with 3D battle animations though they pale in comparison to the above

I'm necroing this thread just to let everyone know that classic Doomtown is the best card game ever and this image proves it.
