Team Four Star - Creators of a bunch of stuff to make people laugh trying to figure out what to do after a decade of comedically retelling Dragon Ball Z.

For as long as the Internet has gone on, people have been taking the piss out of the stuff they watch. And out of all the ways to do that endeavor, one of the biggest ways to do that is through the way of the abridged series, retelling the show in a funny way. And one of the biggest names in the abridging games is the guys we're talking about Team Four Star.

The TFS crew:
KaiserNeko (Scott Frerichs)
Lanipator (Nick Landis)
Takahata101 (Curtis Arnott)
MasakoX (Lawrence Simpson)
Antfish (Anthony Sardinha)
Megami33 (Corinne Sudberg)
yourMoonstone (Kirran Somerlade)
AinTunez (Cliff Weinstein)
MasterWuggles (Grant Smith)
Tyler Koi

Team Four Star started in 2008, hitting the anime fandom square in the mouth with Dragon Ball Z Abridged, or DBZA. It was an instant hit and became one of the most popular shows in its little corner of YouTube, even gaining the attention of folks like Sean Schemmel and Chris Sabat, two of the biggest people in any DBZ English dub regardless of the studio doing it (seriously, the saga of DBZ in English is probably something worth talking about all on its own, but that's not my story to tell). Over the course of ten years, Dragon Ball Z Abridged would mesmerize fans with their takes on the characters, the sagas, and various movies.

But as they say, nothing lasts forever.

In February 2020, one year and five months after the end of Team Four Star's take on the Cell Saga, KaiserNeko announced that DBZA was officially closing up shop after 60 episodes. (https://archive.vn/2C6vQ) The reasons for this decision was posted on both YouTube and their Patreon pages. The main reasons they gave were:

-burnout after doing DBZA for over a decade
-feeling that they didn't want to turn into a zombie of declining quality a la The Simpsons
-The Cell Saga brought a sense of finality to DBZ before the Buu saga took everything off the rails
-TFS feeling that DBZA had a chance to hurt their future prospects, namely Toei coming in and delivering a copyright barrage that could wipe them off the Internet.

https://archive.vn/8S4z0

Perhaps the biggest thing about this announcement was not only the fact that a staple of YouTube was closing its doors, but they had announced they were not in fact going to tackle the Buu saga, they were also making a sizeable amount of money of Patreon (as of me writing this ,a low end of 2 dollars a month and a high end of 25 dollars a month and with their 1,858 patrons this amounts to anywhere between 3,716 dollars a month and 46,450 dollars a month if my math is right) and they still collected it before offically announcing DBZA is over. (https://archive.vn/W64n1) But...they also have other shows in their portfolio.

Along with DBZA, TFS has also entertained with abridging the likes of Hellsing Ultimate, Attack on Titan (albeit one episode only due to copyright issues) and Final Fantasy VII. Along with abridging, they also have Unabridged, which can only be described as TFS trying to do their take on The Office, and DragonShortZ, which consists of the TFS crew creating their original scenarios withthe same DBZA personalities and humor. (and was even the way TFS decided to do the Buu saga before pulling the plug altogether.

So what's the future looking like for these guys? At the moment, SocialBlade has them at 3.5 million subscribers, although they took a brief dip once they announced that DBZA was over. (https://archive.vn/frLIw) Along with their shows, they also have their podcast Talkcast Podshow where they talk about various things in pop culture.

Whether the glory years of TFS are gone for good or if they can strike gold with something different remains to be seen at the moment, but the crew has made it pretty clear that DBZA isn't coming back. And while part of me thinks that DBZA could come back if inspiration strikes after staying away from it for a while, I think that we've seen an era come to an end. And if you want abridging, at least Something Witty Entertainment is around to make anime fans laugh.

Hellsing Abridged is their magnum opus, like that is some truly impressive stuff right there.

They did do an official dub for an OVA movie.
I've yet to watch Hells dubbed since that was their first real foray into professional dubbing, but I guess no one's actually watched it dubbed 'cause I haven't heard anything about it.

Looking up the reviews, it seems to be about a 7 out of 10 rating. I’m assuming that because it wasn’t a really big name show or anything, it didn’t get much attention from the anime community at large.

I felt that way about the Cell saga.
I'd hold DBZ higher up than DB if Toriyama had stuck to his guns and ended it with Frieza's downfall.

the crew has made it pretty clear that DBZA isn't coming back.
Until they need that sweet, sweet money again, just ask Doug Walker how retiring his biggest cashcow went.

Sean Schemmel is a stupid faggot who honestly thinks he's Goku.
This isn't exclusive to Sean either. Several Goku VAs in different languages legit think they're the Son Goku and everyone else is a fucking poser.
It doesn't help that they have legions of dickriders who echo their narcissism.

DBZA was great, while I'll miss their Buu saga, I do believe it ended on a high note. Kaiser is the worst, even though I love his Trunks, I think he's largest to blame for the burn out. He refused to let anyone else edit, and typically episodes would be waiting on him alone.

Hellsing is better, if for no other reason than it finished(it also seemed to be Taka's baby and I think he's the funniest of the three)

They also started an Attack on Titan Abridged, but it got killed ASAP by the rights holder. It seemed like it had some potential.

I've barely dipped my toe into their post DBZA works, they 3D animated Dragonball shorts were bad, their completely original cartoon was atrocious. They were very good at satire and parody, and they did a great blend(usually) of both making the show more serious and funnier. They found a really good balance(usually) of tone. Creating something completely original however is a much different beast. I don't think they have it in their skill set. So, they are done as far as I care. If they get desperate and try and abridge something else I may tune in, but otherwise I don't care what they are up too.

Two Taka related side notes, he voiced Caiphas Cain in a short from If The Emperor had a Text to Speech device. Taka's voice is essentially Alucard's but it's a great fit. He also is cfriends and works with Something Witty Entertainment that does Sword Art Online Abridged(Taka voices the antagonist), which has a great first season(and seems to be a disaster in the second), and potential in My Hero Academia Abridged(Taka voices Allbright)

I haven’t heard that about Toriyama, only that the Cell saga was to end with Goku passing the torch to Gohan in the story, only for that to return to status quo because reasons. And all I can think of is that scenario happening with Devil May Cry when it comes to Nero.

TFS started going downhill after the Frieza saga. Before that the DBZA episodes were good due to incorporating the material quite well and having simple, yet effective, humour. After that saga TFS decided that they were better than the original material and things went downhill. The Cell saga took forever to release, was less funny, had some very iffy sexual orientation jokes (that includes underage characters). Near the end they even hired some f-grade artist to create scenes from scratch to incorporate to their unfunny jokes. It reached the point that the Cell Saga took more time to create than a literal remake of Dragon Ball Z (as DBZ Kai) and a good chunk of Super.

Besides that it seems only Lanipator managed to actually get into the voice acting industry (and even there it's not really big projects). If the team thinks doing a YouTube show can vouch for talent, they'll be disappointed when they realize the most important thing in USA voice acting is sucking cocks.

Besides the Abridged shows there was TFS gaming that was pretty decent, they had a Nuzlocke challenge runs that grew dull as they progressed (though that might be the fault of the games). They had a controversery there when they got wiped, trashed the footage and geniusly decided (for some reason) to level up their mons between recordings while thinking their autistic fans wouldn't notice the sudden level gap. Which killed a lot of investment in the runs, since it calls into question if they didn't do it before.

Taka is also going to be Abbadon (he kinda voiced him in Aeldari Things, even though the only line was "Fuck You!").

Actually, several TeamFourStar members have become VAs.
Besides Lani, Taka has been in a few productions.
Corinne Sudberg (Megami33) has also been in a few actual dubs (like Overlord), too.
Besides Justin Briner, Chris Guerrero (GeneralIvan) actually landed some pretty big roles like being Ainz in Overlord and Gecko Moria in One Piece.

Justin Briner was straight up hired by Funimation to voice a character in My Hero Academia.
Not to inlcude, playing the literal MC (Deku) too.

He has many things to hate, but that forehead can give a One Piece character complex.

No joke, Tomandre's "A Slap on Titan" (aka ASoT) did a better job than TFS did. The only thing TFS has for itself is their version of Keith Shadis was equally good.

I don't know who he was in TFS off the top of my head, but yeah? He was excellent as Moria.
