Oh yeah, I remember those "jokes". Something clearly was wrong whenever they made these, and I think it might have been Kaiser's doing.

I really enjoyed the Frieza Saga, though the way things got delayed and delayed as the Cell Saga went on got a bit ridiculous to the point where they had (justifiably) angry comments on their videos. I liked what they did but the way this it unceremoniously brought to a close and then shot in the head was the fucking worst. If it stays dead then fine I can live with that, but their views on non Dragon ball related stuff are in the toilet.

I'd like to hope they won't do a demo reel but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Also Takahata101 has a punchable face. MasakoX just looks weird but Taka has a face that just says "hit me, I own pugs, hit me"
TFS' original work is pretty terrible all around. They made a completely original cartoon at some point before they canceled DBZA - something called 'way of the fist' or some other generic name - and it was just a slog. Unfunny, cliche in the most uninteresting ways, bland art and animation, and extremely generic. Like a boring Jackie Chan Adventures without Jackie or Uncle.

DBZA was extremely high quality to the point that you can see how much everyone involved was truly passionate about it....but KaiserNeko was absolutely their bottleneck:

- Kaiser refused to let anyone even so much as help him edit, causing almost all of the massive schedule slips they suffered from
- At one point he pushed himself so hard he had a miniature breakdown and had to take a hiatus for his health, holding up everyone because their one editor was out of commission
- He was an utter sub simp and constantly fought with the rest of the cast who were either neutral or positive toward the dub. He always fought with the others over how to pronounce Goku, and is the reason MasakoX went with such a shrill voice for Goku
- I believe it's also implied he's the reason Krillin ended up with the whiny puppy voice when Lanipator demonstrated he could do a dead-on Sonny Strait copy if he wanted to
- He absolutely despised the Faulconer score and only started relenting after Ainztunes joined up in the Cell saga and started making hybrid songs that combined the Japanese track with Bruce's.
- He shipped Dende/Gohan and had big plans to have Dende get sassy and catty with Videl in Buu saga

The other thing that held them back was Takahata101, who would blow out his voice sometimes and because he insisted on playing every bombastic and memeable character that often held up everyone else. In particular they apparently had some fights over who would voice Cell. I believe it was down to Kaiser and Takahata in the end, but Kaiser still ended up doing a bunch of Cell's lines for editing purposes when Takahata would injure himself or get sick.

People kept suggesting that Kaiser hire someone - anyone - to help him edit, but despite the fact that other members of TFS were fully capable of editing and that they were literally making $12,000~ a month from Patreon at their height (plus their merch) Kaiser insisted no one could understand his notes or thought processes but him and it would just be impossible to collaborate. They also claimed that none of the money from Patreon would ever go to the production of DBZA, and so no matter how high the numbers got, Patrons were never to infer that meant DBZA would be released any faster. Instead, they just moved into a giant studio and got a bunch of paid employees for their let's plays and eventually one episode of an underwhelming cartoon.

Incidentally, they originally planned to have Markiplier voice either Hercule or Buu because he'd auditioned for a part in the Trunks movie but that fell through re: Hercule, and then they quit before Buu. Although they blame burnout, if I recall correctly I think Kaiser always hated the Buu saga - it was a different member's favorite, but I forget who at this point, probably Lanipator since he loves the concept of fusion. I get the feeling it was less about true burnout, and more that Kaiser was tired and couldn't be bothered to go through with the work of doing a saga he hated.

They had a special tier on Patreon that was $25 during November and December where they would send out Christmas cards for that particular tier, but on the second year they had it, they never bothered to actually send out those cards. They also used to have private Twitch editing streams every month for Patreons, but they had to eventually stop doing that because Kaiser was doing so little editing that there was nothing to show.

I actually think that the quality of the show continuously went up over time as their skill increased, but the trade-off was that they slowed down to completely unacceptable levels that they always made excuses and deflections over whenever someone would complain about it. Mostly Kaiser, as he would read early comments and pick fights with anyone who said negative things (he continues to do this even at his own subreddit). They actually did a lot of things that the casual DBZA viewer simply never appreciated, such as completely redrawing frames and fixing art/coloring/animation mistakes alongside their eventual ''fully original animation' stuff they started adding later on....but that really just hammers all the more why Kaiser was insane for trying to do it all on his own. According to his own testimony as late as the Cell saga he was still literally even doing the audio leveling for the different lines that TFS would record and send to him. Despite the fact that both Taka and Lani could have done that kind of thing, Kaiser was a total control freak who also did all the directing for the voice acting and chose the takes they used.

I'd argue that it's not even TFS burnout, it's just Kaiser burnout. The annual 'Toei lit our channel on fire, save us Funimation!' fiasco probably didn't help either, but considering how little time anyone else put into DBZA and the fact that all of their 'real work' opportunities came from their DBZA fame (including when Funimation let them write custom dialog for the characters they voiced in Xenoverse 1 and 2), and all the other examples of Kaiser swinging his dick around and demanding his way, I wouldn't be surprised if he all but unilaterally pulled the plug.
So, in short, all their flaws boil down to Kaiser's gay autism and Taka being Canadian. :story:

I'm surprised so many people dislike the Android/Cell sagas in DBZA. I personally dislike the zany non sequitur humor that's rife in Season 1 and still fairly prominent in Season 2, and more played into the character humor of Season 3/4.

The Android saga was as good as anything they had done earlier, it was shortly after Cell showed up that it started to be less and less of a parody.

TFS is my go to for pointing out what the best and worst case scenario of getting "internet big with friends" looks like (aside from RT, but that's an entire company).

They get all the resources in the world and their production quality improves, they bring in outside talent they can pay for for some parts BUT at its core, DBZA remains true to what it originally was and what made it charming. Pretty much everyone wins when it comes to the main content.

On the other hand you have them pouring all their energy into side projects no one but them and their most die hard fans care about because they have their paypigs that will fund it. Long delays and little real transparency, because they aren't really beholden to anyone and not treating it like a proper business, with deadlines and obligations. Personal drama coupled with an emotional investment in the product means you can't easily substitute other capable creators when necessary, so that the weakest link will break the entire chain - over and over again.

In a way, it's good that they stopped where they stopped. The Cell Finale was a high note. Just a shame it took over a decade to get there.
TFS really did maintain that 'fanboys making a fan project' feel up to the end, rather than getting fake and manufactured like most passion projects that succeed become.

This is a running joke related to the fact that Namekians grow up at ridiculous rates. Dende and Gohan are about the same age, but in Namekian years, Dende is already late-adolescent/adult, despite them being at matching maturity when they met. It relies on inappropriate humor but it's not as inappropriate as it looks at first glance.
It's a pretty good observation I haven't thought of. But the problem is that SAOA works because the original material takes itself seriously, so adding silliness works. But DBZA is already silly, so trying to rewrite it doesn't work (especially when the tone itself changes to being more realistic to being more cartoony depending on what TFS thought works better for a given scene).

Jesus, it also has drug use. This calls for a Stone Toss:
View attachment 1670857
I'm not completely sure what you mean here, but I was comparing the two abridging styles. They both take a serious property and make it silly, but the s1-2 format goes more abstract and absurd and often relies on skits, brick jokes and tangents, while the 3-4 format hugs closer to the source material and is more like 'portraying the original content in a humorous fashion' - truthfully only s1 completely embraced that form, while s2 had several moments that were dramatic without breaking the tension with humor.
The Android saga was as good as anything they had done earlier, it was shortly after Cell showed up that it started to be less and less of a parody.
They mentioned this a few times and said they felt that Cell just interfered with the ability to be funny because he was such a shambling horror. Personally I think they were just being Cell fanboys focusing on the horror aspects of Cell, but it is another reason I'm disappointed they stopped with Cell instead of Buu, as they would have felt less bound to be serious after their favorite baddie was gone.

I would also like to point out something:
Kaiser was getting help in editing episodes.
For certain scenes in the series, Kaiser collaborated with Kirbopher (who was familiar with the TFS cast).
I find it funny because Kirbopher had his own share of troubles last year (Listed on The Broken Staircase spreadsheet and the fiasco that led to him losing his role in Fire Emblem).
Kaiser stated multiple times that Kirbopher's contributions to the editing were limited to him redrawing scenes so fix what would be errors in their dub, or allow more creative freedom for some scenes. Only Kaiser touched any form of editing to assemble the video.

Something should have been done years ago to fix the bottleneck that was Kaiser, because I remember several times they'd give en estimated progress meter for the next X episodes, and consistently the next ones were always at the "editing video together" stage, with video #3 onwards being script editing/finalization.
Sounds like it. Was Kaiser the de facto director?
Yes. IIRC, Kaiser was also the person that kicked off the idea to replace several of MasakoX's roles with somebody else. I do not remember where I saw that though.

Also, their original cartoon has 2 episodes, though I do not blame anyone for either missing the second one or forgetting it exists, it's pretty bland and tropey.

Hard agree on that.

In my opinion, and despite the entire kerfuffle surrounding Toriyama's (alleged) problems with his editors during the Androids/Cell arcs and fumbling the "passing the torch" thing, Majin Boo not only feels like a lot more "Dragon Ball" than Cell did, but was more scary.

It's weird that the funimation group don't like TFS. iirc, the 4kids cast love Yugioh Abridged. I'd think it'd be the same with DBZA.

Timestamp 47:39 Salty Sean Schemmel losing to Chris Sabat. When I saw it via livestream, it was the funniest thing ever.
That was a horrific watch. From the "kamehameha ha ha" to the abysmal gameplay, to Sean's face contorting in his facecam, the whole thing was vomit inducing.

This isn't exclusive to Sean either. Several Goku VAs in different languages legit think they're the Son Goku and everyone else is a fucking poser.
It doesn't help that they have legions of dickriders who echo their narcissism.
Sean's attatchment to the character is weird enough, now you're telling me a bunch of other jokers act the same way? How delusional can you get? "Now, onto the news. A strange man dressed in an orange gi was shot to death trying to stop a mugging. Eyewitness accounts state that he leapt in front of the victim, ordered the mugger to let the woman go, and shouted the name of a Hawaiin king at the top of his lungs."

You think if we had all the Goku voice actors in the same room, we'd have a literal cock fight on our hands? One to walk out alive gets to be the true Son Goku.

I think that’s just Sean. It’s been said here that Chris Ayers loved their take on Frieza, and IIRC, Vic Mignogna liked their Broly movie, and Chris Sabat not only loves their stuff, but also did the “it’s over 9000” but with one of the guys in a Nappa cosplay. And not only that, Chris Sabat is rumored to be the guy that got their foot in the door of actual dubbing (if not took them on as proteges), and is the force that keeps TFS from being ass blasted by Toei on behalf of Funimation.

They're not as zealous as Sean, but they really like to rub it in your face that they're the guy you loved seeing on TV every day/night.
What makes Sean stand out is that they've realized they will not win a war against fandubs/fan spin-offs/alternate universes and either remain neutral about it or try to embrace it and make a small buck in a cameo appearance.
They still say they're the Son Goku, just that this guy here is pretty good too. Sean can't even do that.
Which makes me think he'd win the theoretical cockfight; he wants it more than they do.

Wow, I think the original cartoon was what killed my interest in TFS for the most part. Tropey isn't necessarily bad, but they were all such boring tropes, and the art and animation were so bland. Dropping DBZA and providing something like that as a theoretical replacement was pretty terrible. I think they dropped the whole 'progress updates' and progress bar (as well as just abandoning their site entirely) mostly because it was useless due to being stuck on 'editing' for the largest amount of time simply because Kaiser was stubbornly bottlenecking it. The fact that he went so far as to shutter DBZA completely once he finally gave up rather than finally just handing over the editing job is crazy.
Hard agree on that.

It's a controversial opinion, but I like Buu more than Cell, both as an arc and a villain. It's lame that Toriyama claimed backsies on letting Gohan take over as the protagonist because Gohan didn't have 'the right stuff' for it, since Goku's character development dead-ended in the Android saga (at best), but putting that aside it's a much more fun arc that lets more people actually be involved, and also feels more Dragonball. And a guy who literally does murder not just all of humanity but all of the side/ex-main characters at once is arguably way scarier than a melodramatic fop who succeeds at neither. Even if Buu's design is way sillier. DBZA abridging it probably would have brought more appreciation for the arc, but alas.

Funimation adores TFS. Only Sean has a problem with them. Funimation constantly gives TFS opportunities, like the aforementioned voice roles in Xenoverse they were allowed to script themselves. Other things they did were let TFS voice the Cell puppets scene in the World Tournament arc (Toei came down like lightning and forced them to undo that) and giving Kaiser a bit-part in the RoF movie. Multiple Funi dub actors also did secret cameos in the show. Toei hates DBZA because it doesn't really understand the concept of 'abridged' and sees it as 1- leeching off of their copyrighted material to make money and 2- maliciously mocking their material. Sean hates DBZA because he's bitter and jealous and literally blocks other Goku voice actors on Twitter because he's that petty.

Actually, he's so petty that he even tried to get Peter Kelamis ejected from Kamehacon back in 2018 and only failed because Peter leaked this and fans exploded in rage at Sean over it.

Learning about Sean being a cunt back in the day was like learning that Santa Claus isn't real. What a blackpill.
It's double-sad for me because with TFS you get the impression Chris Sabat is the opposite, super into what fans are doing, super approachable and friendly, supportive enough that he came and attended TFS' new studio party and was totally behind getting the old Vegeta actor in to voice the slimegeta while Sean freaks out at the very concept that anyone other than himself and Masako Nozawa voice Goku....and then Weeb Wars happend and I found out he's awful.
I've also heard that Toei got on TFS because of their merch runs.
According to TFS, they consulted with lawyers about their merch runs to make sure that they weren't infringing on copyright. Their merch, at least, was nothing Toei could mess with. They mentioned that a few times when talking about the legal issues they faced involving DBZA.

They mean that it can (and regularly does) get their youtube nuked from orbit by Toei until Funimation fixes it. However, that's a lie. If that's how they really felt, they'd move their episodes to a different account/site instead, because Toei doesn't care if they're making new content, they nuke the channel over old stuff all the time. I think the answer is one or both of these: 1 - Kaiser is bored and burnt out and making excuses, pointing to something that didn't deter him in the past but sounds legitimate until you think about it, and 2 - They're afraid that the Vic lawsuit may interfere with Funimation's ability to protect them. If Funimation goes belly up, if Sabat gets ousted, or if Sony steps in and starts regulating Funimation differently, they'll be naked in the cold facing down Toei. It's entirely possible they even got some private communications from Sabat that Funimation can't continue to protect them - like, they can just point to previous arguments/protections for established episodes (because Toei has nailed them all the way up to Ep 60) but can't do that again now for anything new. (though it's also possible it's a preventative measure: hold off and wait to see if the ship sinks. If yes, DFE to protect themselves, if no, they're safe to keep it up, and they don't risk being in the middle of an arc or episode when they suddenly have to stop)

Good to know that everything i specifically hated was the result of one guy. The weird gay shit with Dende was uncomfortable the longer it went on, he's basically a child making adult sexual jokes at one point. Stop

DB fans can argue about if or if not Krillin is aweful or weak, but showing him as an utter whipped blanket started to drain the funny. Im also someone who is not a fan of Yamcha being a "fighter" and pummeled into the dirt but that's canon so 🤷‍♂️

The whole,Broly movie episode with the "gay, interspecies man cat, wedding" was about when i unselected the bell notification. Unless i did it due to their podcasts about anime.

The rest of the Broly movie was pretty fucking good though. I think the hatred they had actually turned out for the better for once. Trunks getting bitch-made by Broly in more ways than one is probably what Kaiser was going for. Frankly he should've just stuck to humans/aliens rather than disgusting kid pedo-tier faggotry and degenerate bestiality.

I’m not a fan of DBZ, so I haven’t watched any of their flagship series apart from an episode or two that a friend showed me to try to make me a fan. I did recently watch their FF7 show, the remake and all of its accompanying commentary reviving my long dormant love of the franchise, and it’s kind of a weird project. The first two seasons are blatant parodies, sometimes trying too hard to be edgy, but mostly successful at being funny. The two seasons that followed are still ostensibly comic, but also make attempts at being genuinely moving, as if the creators saw BoJack Horseman and wanted to make that instead. There are times when it feels like it’s a straight forward retelling of FF7 with some jokes thrown in.
