I don't really listen to much death metal nowadays as I find it gets too samey after a while, especially newer bands. That being said, Christ on a cross, Possessed surprised the fuck out of me with their new album last year. The album is all killer no filler, but Shadowcult is my favourite track on the album.
I also remember them doing a bunch of videos prior to the release of the album and got a kick out of them making fun how modern metal bands go out of their way to make their logos impossible to read.

They did a reworking of that track on a recent album, but it not great. Usual nowadays VS stuff. Weak vocals, shitty production, wimpy instruments.

Yeah, but unlike euro power, almost nobody was calling it "USPM" until pretty recently. In retrospect people can see a throughline, but at the time they were mostly just considered mid/low rung metal bands.
At least the internet's giving bands like Cirith Ungol and Omen a big spike in attention, even if it doesn't totally make up for how little attention they got back when people were buying albums and it mattered.
