Selfishness is bad because it concentrates wealth into the hands of a very small percentage of the population. In a less selfish society (ie. communism) wealth would be shared out equally and nobody would go hungry or cold so that a small percentage of elites can have pet tigers and drink champagne with gold flakes in it. I think this is the main appeal of adopting a political system that isn't structured around selfishness (ie. capitalism).
