The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story - That one show based on that one famous gay clothing designer. The one that lived in Miami Beach, Florida.

Ever since I started watching The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, I have been hooked to the series ever since FX dumped it onto Netflix. Has anyone else been watching this series and have seen it? What do you think about the series? I personally like it, one of the few series I've been into in a while. The whole thing is just fucked, with what Andrew did. But yeah, I want to see how all of this plays out despite it being something that did happen.

I enjoyed the OJ trial first season so I was interested in this intially, but I ended up getting bored and losing interest about half way through. It felt like the whole 'failed manhunt' part of the story took a backseat to enforcing some idea of a motive for his killing, when I think the more interesting aspect of the case is the fact that the motive was never discovered. But that's what happens when you base the story on a book about the events and not the real life events themselves.

I've watched the first half of it as it aired, but stopped watching because I became too busy; and just haven't finished it. It was pretty good, and I really enjoy those kind of stories.

im surprised this only got a thread now considering how long it's been out. i heard the 3rd season will be about the aftermath of katrina so that'll be interesting
ok actually i looked it up. they scrapped it, and im disappointed
they also scrapped a season about the bill clinton scandal and im also disappointed

I'm old enough to be made ill by the very mention of the O.J. trial media circus, even now, but I was still intrigued enough by the cast to watch the first season. I thought it was great, overall. Even Travolta I didn't mind despite his his baffling casting as Shapiro.

I started the second season and really enjoyed what I saw, but I haven't finished it. I look forward to it. They picked a great and not so obvious trial to focus on. Makes me wonder what they'll choose for season three.

The Katrina one went through a couple different phases and it really seemed like they didn't know how exactly they wanted to present it. I am disappointed too that the Clinton scandal got scrapped though, that seemed like it could have been interesting in light of modern politics. But maybe that's the same reason it got scrapped.

Although this second season is making it more look like the motive for
Andrew Cunanan murdering Gianni Versace is because Versasce gave Andrew HIV (which was revealed that Gianni did not have HIV but cancer in his ear), that maybe Andrew blamed him for that on top of him being infatuated with the clothing designer by way of barging into his conversation at the gay club they met at. But this could also be coupled with the way Andrew seemed to have been raised, being almost a spastic, crazy manchild on drugs demanding he be given everything as revealed in season 2, episode 6, called "Descent".

Autopsy found Cunanan was HIV negative though.

I know that, but if he knew that Gianni was sick and given the time in which all of this took place, he might've not known it was cancer and instead assuming it was HIV, given his seemingly negative worldview being within the gay community.

Ah I understand. It is possible he mistook the cancer for HIV, though it's my understanding that his apparent self-loathing of homosexuality was pure speculation on the books part. Then again, so is the idea that Gianni and Cunanan even met. More than one source suggest they did, but they don't agree on the where and when.

Maybe the book played on the rather vivid imagination that Andrew appears to have, coupled with his heavy drug use. Not to mention, he is quite the manipulative stalker too. So, given the most of the series is through his eyes, maybe we're seeing it how he sees it?

Perhaps. That's an interesting way of looking at it, and Cunanan was apparently quite intelligent. On the other hand, the show likes to tout itself as being factual, so I don't think they intended Cunanan to come across as an unreliable narrator of sorts. Maybe if they'd focused on himcompletely that might have worked.

Intelligent, but such a manchild too.

I got you on that, but it does seem like they wanted to focus on him as well as those he hurt. But they also wanted to focus on Gianni and crew as well. I almost would say they rely on Andrew a lot more and almost seem like they want the viewer to see his perspective more than anyone in the show.

Although it was detailed or at the very least hinted at in the book that Gianni had HIV, his sister (who the years have not been kind to, yikes) told that Gianni had cancer in his ear and thought he was going to die. That is why he was grooming his sister so hard in the series. The cancer was thankfully removed and Gianni was murdered six months later.

What boggles my mind with how famous Versace seemed to have been at that time, I'm surprised he seemed have no security around his home or any personal protection.

I believe they focused on Cunanan because he's the most malleable. The Versace family dispute much about the series and a lot of the people depicted are still living. But you can do a lot with Cunanan's character, either make him more likeable or more psychotic and there's not a lot of people who are going to get upset about it (except maybe the Versace family but again they were already upset so no harm done there really).

Gianni Versace just seemed to be quite a down to earth person though. That bit where he walks to get his own magazines was true and something he was known to do regularly. He didn't seem to want fame to disconnect him from people and he was well liked. I suppose he simply had no reason to believe his life was ever at risk, and Cunanan's killing of him was so random that there's no way he could have predicted it anyway.

I actually just started watching The People vs. O.J. Simpson not long ago.

I watched some episodes, but it was airing at a bad time for me so I dropped it.

See, I don't think Darren Criss is a bad actor (because he's not), but there are moments when I wasn't sure about the casting because he tends to be waaaay to much over the top when he does drama. I think he hasn't yet moved on from Glee when even the drama scenes had some sort of comedic tune to them so it was ok. I would cast him in AHS as a regular because AHS can get very campy sometimes, but not ACS.

Cody Fern was awesome, though.

I really enjoyed OJ Simpson better despite Sarah Paulson.

Luckily for you, both series are streaming on Netflix.
