another decade has past and looking back at it, it was not as good as the last one but still better then people give it credit for. what was that game? the game that shook you to your very core and made you feel like all the bullshit you have gone through in life so far made it worthwhile?

for me, it was Fallout new vegas

.

the amount of weapons, gear, perks and skills makes replaying the game always feel different then before. people still til this day debate whatever faction is best for the Mojave wasteland. i truly hope that in the next decade, we can get something similler or outright better.

"shameful edit" shoutout to the gravity rush games. one was bit lackluster in content since it was on the ps-vita but the gameplay, soundtrack, interesting characters and world building really brought me into the game. two is one but on a PS4. meaning it has everything i loved about one and SO MUCH MORE! shame they shut down the online mode, it was fun looking around for treasure and using other players photos as clues.

In a very, very personal way for me, it was Katawa Shoujo, a visual novel about a boy going to a school with crippled girls.

That “game” was very powerful, it resonated with me, and I found it at a time I really needed some of the messages I got from it. In terms of memories that have stuck with me over the last decade it’s that game. To the point that I almost can’t pick it, because I’m unable to have a rational, objective opinion of its quality, instead of a purely emotional reaction to it.

I think in terms of best game of the decade, it may have to be Kerbal Space Program. It’s not even my favorite or possibly even my top 5 favorites. But that game is truly special.
It is a game that manages to have some of the highest emotional highs with some of the lowest lows. It teaches you things, through doing. It has a sandbox mode that actually gives you a reason to play it. And it’s a game that makes me keep coming back to it every so often just to try something new.

I still have a bitter taste in my mouth with New Vegas as it also highlights what's currently gotten worse in the industry. Publishers applying pressure to devs to rush a product (and on that same token devs not adhering to the contract they have signed). Bethesda did give them a raw deal time-wise, but Obsidian should've acknowledged the time they had better to flush out the game where they could've rather than making the scope too broad. A lot of stuff was cut because of this, and I don't think it was specifically anybody's fault. A much more clear example of this situation was Bioware and EA with Anthem, and all the foolery that went on with that. At least Obsidian still released an amazing game with the time they were given.

I actually got to play Sunset Overdrive this year since I upgraded my PC and it became one of my favorite games. Beauty in simplicity. In one of the interviews the devs said they wanted to make a fun game, and so they started designing an environment that was fun. At one point they realized they were having so much fun making and playing in the area they had to move on with a story. Every area in the map is fun to explore and play around in, and the setting reminds me of older games like Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Also has a fantastic reference to NeoGaf which dated the game for me.

All in all this has certainly been a weird decade for gaming, and I hope that 2020 developers focus on making games fun, and stop the trend of releasing a buggy mess then patching it together.

I'm an uncultured swine, too cheap and/or lazy to buy many titles simply because I couldn't be bothered to open my wallet, so I don't really have a big pool to draw from. However I really have to hand it to Monster Hunter: World for sticking the landing for almost every feature in their grand leap to the next generation. Not only was it the first game in the franchise to enjoy worldwide success as a result, but it's one of the few mainstream titles that actively frowns on nickle-and-diming people for wanting to stay ahead. All while remaining a beautiful piece of art that only the biggest budgets can afford. Even aspects where it fell short were eventually addressed with Iceborne, which I am currently working through before the next Siege update drops.

I'd say the three best games of the decade would be Fallout: New Vegas, Final Fantasy XV, and the Resident Evil 2 remake.

Moreso New Vegas and the RE2 remake than Final Fantasy XV, mainly because New Vegas was a masterpiece and the RE2 remake was an unexpected success that proved Capcom is probably getting better after all these years.

New Vegas was the best game of the early 2010's, Final Fantasy XV was the best game of the mid-2010's, and RE2 Remake was the best game of the late 2010's.

Of course, honorable mentions go out to both Red Dead Redemption games, Mafia II, and the remakes of Crash and Spyro.

Since NV is already mentioned ill just toss in my sleeper hit. Dying Light.

It's far from the best game ever but running, jumping and hacking my way through hordes of zombies still manages to be tons of fun both solo and with friends. The DLC was great as well, being almost as big as the base game.

In fact, I'm gonna go play some right now.

Tales of Berseria, NieR: Automata, Soulcalibur VI and Devil May Cry 5. I didn't just have fun with those four games, they brought me happiness and joy on a visceral level I haven't experienced from vidya in decades. 😍 They're now some of my happiest memories of my entire life.

I enjoyed Starcraft II, since the original game was part of my childhood and playing the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy made me feel like I was seven again. I would also love to mention Fallout: New Vegas, Code Vein, Tekken 7, the Resident Evil 2 remake, Endless Space 2, A Hat in Time, Total War: Attila and the God Eater trilogy.

Video games were one of the very few redeeming things of the 2010s.

I don't care about cultural and social context of videogames because that's not fun, so this decade has been great and I played a lot of great games:
Darkest Dungeon, Overwatch, Doom, Dark Souls series, FFXV, Mordhau, Elex, Ancestor's Legacy, XCom 2, the Witcher games and so many more I'm probably forgetting and I'm looking forward to playing Warcraft III reforged.
If I had to pick one then I'd go with Elex since it seems not many people other than germans have played it and if you like RPGs like Gothic you should play it.
This decade was great and the future looks bright my friends.

I am a jaded old school JRPG fan and have been disappointed with even the games people rave about that are newer.

Persona 5 still managed to amaze me. The gameplay and character interaction are the best in any Persona game to date and the graphics are a work of art, especially considering how smooth everything flowed. I find music in newer games is kind of boring since it's all orchestral scores now, but P5's was fantastic.

The only things that could have been better are the combat, as it's a bit too easy and the dungeon exploration was a little bland and boring.

Aside from that, I would say it's easily the best JRPG of the decade.

I'll admit I'm not all that big for games that have popped up over the last decade, but there are a few which stand out to me.

1) Pokemon Black/White - This to me was Game Freak's last great triumph. Black 2 and White 2 were great as well, but Black/White gave me everything I could've hoped for after the rollercoaster ride that was Platinum. It had a great story, the graphics while not spectacular were fun to look at, the seasons mechanic gave the games character and the pokemon - weeeew boy - the gen 5 pokemon were the cherry on top. I still use many of them in my squads (Cofagrigus in particular being my favourite for its spectacular grin - Gengar, eat your heart out).

2) Terraria - Terraria is a deceptive game. It was dismissed as 2D Minecraft, but then pulled out the big guns (figuratively and literally) and dunked so much content into the vanilla game alone that it's hard to see it as anything more than Minecraft with sprites. The music is great, the bosses for the most part are fun and challenging and the amount of variety on how you can build your character and what sort of creatures you can encounter on your journey is immaculate. I still boot the game up every now and then and always find myself spending a good two or three hours doing whatever I can to get the best stuff!

3) Cuphead - Shitty Recolor and Scratch this Nut brought this up briefly but just mentioning the name Cuphead puts a big ol' smile on my face. Cuphead is probably my favourite game from this decade and for damn good reasons. It calls back to the days when there was no easy mode on games, the battles are fun for the most part, the characters are diverse and endearing (with special mention to my waifu Hilda Berg because her battle, forms and taunts were perfect), the music is top notch and the animations - oh dear god the animations - set this game apart so much it hurts. As a fan of old-style animation seeing a game revive this often forgotten and dismissed style of making cartoons this game is exactly what I could've hoped for and I'm damn glad the developers didn't back down when the SJWs came after them for their "racist" drawings. This game is to me the best an indie dev company can give - and it deserves the title of one of the best games of this decade.

I don't remember all the games I played this decade, because I play a lot of fucking games. But DMCV has the most complex and smoothest controlling combat I've ever played.

I think the Total War franchise knocked it out of the fucking park this decade. Creative assembly released:

Shogun 2, which along with Fall of the Samurai was some of the best total war ever. For a game made in 2010 it's still easily playable today. Rome II and it's expansion, Attila. Had a terrible start but is a very solid game now. Attila was never my cup of tea though. I don't count 3 kingdoms and thrones of brit. because I didn't care for them but they have their fans too.

Then there's my personal favorite series, Total War Warhammer. With a name as awkward and dumb as that, you know you're in for a good time. By TWWH2 they fleshed out an incredibly diverse faction roster, 14 to choose from. Everything from standard humans (German or French), dwarves (basically Scotsmen), and snooty elves going up against crazy shit like evil talking rats, orcs, vikings, BDSM enthusiasts, Egyptian statues coming to life, and vampires - both the normal kind and the Pirates of the Caribbean variety. So yea, final answer Warhammer 2 as the sum total of CA effort this decade.

There's not many game devs I can look at and say "their attitude toward gaming and their understanding of what their audience wants is really good," but somehow Creative Assembly is one. They had a few controversy hiccups but nothing deal breaking for me. The amount of mods they allow and support and in some cases even incorporate into the game is something I wish more developers embraced. They allow many mods but don't rely on the modding community to actually fix their games (cough Bethesda), but instead competitively update their game. During Warhammer 2's life cycle especially they have released many updates, some free and some larger expansions having a price tag, but the breadth of available content gives this franchise a lot more legs when it comes to replayability.

just here to give a shutout to devil may cry 5. never thought capcom had it in them to do the series justice after DMC devil may cry.

"edit" oh, and Xenoblade chronicles one and X were one of my favorite Jrpgs of the decade. interesting to see what they do with the remake.

I'm going to have to say either Kerbal Space Program or Doom 4 for my favorites of this decade. I sank so much time and installed way too many mods for KSP for me to leave it out. Doom 4 was the last big game that I was actually impressed by, and did almost everything I wanted out of an FPS.
