What do you guys think causes people to have a specific gender identity?

The typical answer from those who support transgender rights is that it's something you're born as, usually because of genetics. This is of course a convenient thing for them to believe, because most people would oppose discrimination over something genetic and therefore out of anyone's control. However, how this "trans gene" would spread considering it would make people much less likely to have biological children is a difficult question to answer. There's different speculations about how the "trans gene" could spread, but they're just that; speculation. Likewise, there are studies that may seem to indicate biological differences between different gender identities, but their scientific validity is sometimes questionable.

A common answer from those opposed to trans rights is that being transgender is a choice. This too is a convenient belief for them, as it means that trannies choose to be "deviant" and it's their own fault, so it's okay to disagree with it. However, this belief of course brings up the question of why anyone would choose to be transgender in a culture where they can literally be taken to the gallows for it. And of course, if you ask almost anyone of any gender identity if they chose to feel that way, they would say no.

I personally think that it likely is genetic in origin but that the identity of being a transwoman is often appropriated by alienated males/cucks who nonseriously transition in a sort of midlife crisis. I think that these people are fairly obvious as they will generally be quite unwilling to put a significant effort into transitioning and will blatantly look like men and post dick pics everywhere as well as always telling everyone that they are trans and yelling at anyone who refuses to respect their neopronouns. This is a completely separate group with a completely different underlying cause.

So anyway what do you guys think?

Read studies about gender confusion if you want qualitative information. As for personal anecdotes, look up accounts from 1985-1998, a sweetspot when transgender discussion gained public traction in expensive forms of media, but before the internet let billions of people contribute to social understanding while eating cheetos in their underwear.

While I think intersexed individuals could argue strongly the cause of their condition is genetic, I'm leaning more towards upbringing and choice (mental issues) for transsexuals. With intersexed individuals there's clearly a biological issue (from neurological to physiological), whereas I don't think the majority of transsexuals can claim the same. Granted of course, my experience with transsexuals have been limited to the weirdo tranny lolcows that are featured here (and may in fact be a vocal and crazy minority)

I think it has pretty much the same underlying causes, whatever they may be, as sexual orientation. Sometimes, people just know they're that way from an early age. Others have a vague idea that something's wrong for most of their life, but don't realize exactly what until something happens that brings it into focus. And then there's the people who just do it to be edgy, and use it as a mask for whatever isn't going right in their lives.

So yeah, I'd say genetics for the first type, genetics and/or upbringing for the second, and choice for the third.

All three are wrong if you mean the actual condition of gender dysphoria.

Fake trannies who are just doing it for attention don't qualify.

It seems most likely to be partly genetics and partly the fetal exposure to hormones in the womb. Since all fetuses start "female," they need exposure to the proper balance of hormones to develop into a functional male. It seems very likely that those who end up dysphoric either do not get that proper exposure or are, for whatever reason, insensitive to it.

Twin studies with monozygotic (identical) and dizygotic (fraternal) twins show an increased likelihood of both twins being dysphoric when the twins are identical, which is a pretty strong sign of a genetic component, but most of the time, twins are not both tg, so that's not the whole story.

It's a mix of genetics and upbringing. Genetics have more hold than environment, but that doesn't mean the latter lacks influence:

If a child predisposed to gender dysphoria is brought up in a home fundamentally against transgenders, they'll be likely to stick with their birth gender and leave their dysphoria as an undercurrent in their lives.
If a child not predisposed to gender dysphoria is brought up in a home where they have two moms with rainbow colored hair, there is a chance that they will become a transgender just by their environment.

I too believe I have seen all three. I believe there is significant hormonal and genetic reasoning behind extreme cases of gender dysphoria, but I also believe that the vast majority of 15-30 year olds fall into the "chooser" category, although they'll never admit it. They are usually low-commitment and low-maintenance transgenders, with the individuals I often witness "choosing" to be transgender publicly identify as a either homosexual or bisexual of their unassigned sex, or the catch-all non-binary gender. They also usually dress in accordance with their assigned gender and use the restrooms of their assigned gender. Most of them are assigned white women and they tend to exclude straight white males from all of their events, and often group themselves with blacks when speaking about how their community is oppressed. Also, the ones that I know personally have all been subject to some sort of sexual trauma before the age of 18.

I believe that with the legitimacy of the "genetic" transgender minority, and the pandemic of "chooser" transgenders trying to appropriate the genetic TG's oppression, there is a new wave of parenting purposely or ignorantly confusing their children by giving them the option from a young age to choose their gender or give them the "fluid" option to be a different gender each day as they see fit. While an adult's identified gender itself does not affect me, it can cause substantial mental damage to a growing child... and child abuse certainly does affect me. Regardless of whether or not gender is fluid, fixating on gender has been shown to cause extreme psychological stress including anxiety, depression, poor performance in school, and suicidal thoughts and actions. I think there are going to be a ton of otherwise "normal" kids coming up the pipe that are going to be battling with gender dysphoria unnecessarily.
