What even is a Criterion?

They're a home video distribution company that release cult films, arthouse films, and other films that they consider "important" or "classic". They also help innovated standard home video stuff, like letterboxing, bonus features, and commentary tracks.

I don't collect them as such, but buy them when there's a title I like. Most of the Archers / Mickey Powell films are on Criterion. A few Hitchcocks. And some Ealing comedies. All good stuff. Life was simpler then. Peeping Tom is one of my favs. [It's not what you think, BTW. Look it up.]

I took a film history class not too long ago, and nearly all the foreign movies were from the Criterion Collection.

They're definitely good for people who want to watch historically important movies as well as old arthouse flicks.

I think I have their old laserdisc release of Akira, had crazy shit like storyboards and the first couple of issues of the comic via step one frame function. I got it because it was the dying days of LDs so hey hybrid Akira for ten bucks. They seem to do nice work but I've never looked into them any great amount.

I have their blu-rays of Breathless, Repo Man, Lost in America, Medium Cool and Barry Lyndon. In terms of their movies I've torrented, the list is much higher lol.

I don't think Kino Lorber showed up at all in that class.

I don't actively collect them, but I have a few things by them. Some Cocteau, Bunuel, Pasolini, Fellini, ect...

I would but as an Australian it's way too expensive. I can't even play the Blu-rays without using a multi-region player that is kind of trash.

If it wasn't so costly I would have gotten their Blu-ray of Stagecoach, but with the conversion, the shipping, and then the GST, it was more cost effective to find an Italian release, especially as I don't need to change my players region for it.

I do however like to get BFI stuff. I have all of their Kurosawa sets, as well as a Blu-ray of Rashomon. I do need to get a release of Ran that doesn't have the horrendous English audio (really, really bad dub), but it's not top priority. I have their release of Tokyo Story, and I bought Modern Times off them. When I have more money I will by their release of Phantom of the Opera (25) because I own a pretty bad home release which was before the restoration as well as City Lights as it looks really good.

I also own a few releases that are identical to the Criterion releases except for the boxes. Arrow Films in the UK do a lot of that stuff, and I have The Graduate from them, and something else I think.

I love the work they do. Like, Stagecoach actually became watchable. And I live for DVD commentaries as you just learn so much. They should keep up their good work, but unfortunately I can support them without hawking off a kidney.

I think the only physical disc I bought is Fritz Lang's Metropolis. The are torrents floating around out there of earlier Criterion Collection releases of Metropolis, but none of them had the full reconstruction of the "Thin Man" subplot, so I had to buy the disc.

All the other Criterion things I have been able to pirate.

I don't collect Criterion, but I do have a good chunk of their Fellini releases, a couple of Errol Morris documentaries, and Brazil, which is still the gold standard for special releases.

I only own a few (my greatest catches being Nagisa Oshima's Merry Christmas, Mister Lawrence and Terry Gilliam's Brazil), all of which I bought back when I was on vacation in Canuckistan a few years ago. I'd love to collect more, but their Region B repertoire is limited and shipping costs from the U.K. can get quite high.Although I've managed to see some of their other releases while sailing on the seven seas

I once bought the Criterion DVD of Salo from a Borders for $25 and later sold it on eBay for $800. Seeing that one only once was more than enough for me. This obviously was a very long time ago.
