The decade of the 2010s compared to past decades - Are some things better or worse compared to past decades?

Here are some ways I think things have gotten better in the 2010s:
  • It’s easier now than ever before to connect with people around the world
  • Terrorist organizations have had less power as of the second half of the 2010s
  • There have been more peace talks with North Korea than ever before
  • There are less communist nations (hopefully this trend continues, but you can never be too sure)
  • Medical care is so good in some places that it has allowed people to live longer than we thought possible (this can also be a bad thing depending on perspective)
  • There is less war today compared to previous decades (it won’t last forever, but it’s nice while it’s there)
  • KiwiFarms began in the 2010s and it allows us to laugh at exceptional individuals on the internet
Here are some of the bad things of the 2010s:
  • Due to technology changes, less people are truly talking to each other in person
  • Mega corporations are trying to limit speech more often
  • Internet censorship is becoming more of a norm
  • It’s becoming more normal to make your sexuality/kinks a big part of your personality (at least in the US, not as sure about other places)
  • Despite our medical advances, bottom surgery for troons is being regularly performed on people despite no true standard or method to create good results (because there are none)
  • Furries are way too open about being furries
  • An HIV+ sperm bank exists in New Zeland
  • Anti-vaxxers are bringing back old diseases
  • The fat acceptance movement really became big in this decade
  • Due to internet culture, more people are becoming over sensitive
  • Obesity is becoming more and more common in some nations
These are just a few things. Feel free to add more to certain categories or debate on anything brought up. It’s just fun to look back at things sometimes.

There's also the normalisation of authoritarian legislation enacted by lawmakers who claim it's to 'protect' the masses. Given that comparing people to the Nazis is so common, these days, it should be noted that the Nazis used that very same excuse to limit civil liberties in the wake of the Reichstag Fire.

Authoritarianism is making a comeback in family-friendly packaging.

Consumer-Electronics has gotten cheaper, faster and more widespread. The upside is that its easier to connect with others around the Globe, the Downside is that not only does it hamper face-to-face contact but it also allows us to be constantly bombarded by tragedies and other depressing news from around the world.

On top of that, from my experience, Social Media has essentially become a Babysitter for today's children and toddlers, obviously this is a bad thing for reasons I shouldn't have to list.

All I can say is that I'm glad I was growing up in time before Smartphones and apps like Discord became a thing.

The 2010s were like totally cool in their early phase, 2010-'12, which where like the best part of my life and still had the 2000s feel, I'd say that was the internet's peak, 2013 was the weird year in-between, it was only in 2014 when everything went down and in 2015 the lunacy was in full effect.

The only good things are that internet culture is now mainstream, access to entertainment has never been easier and cheaper and there is more consciousness about politics and society.

Wage stagnation further pushed us toward the gig economy. Once delivery drones become a thing a lot of people are fucked.

This has been a pretty terrible decade.

Depresses the hell out of me to think of the sharp decline almost everything took.

I especially hate how nerd culture basically killed itself, I saw first hand vibrant, fun communities online become totally ruined by bitter infighting over politics, it's absolutely distressing.

I sincerely hope better days are ahead.

There are already far more people than jobs in many countries.

Nerdiness has been taken over by corporate influence. Instead of history, art, politics, mechanics, computer nerds etc. we got Marvel, Disney or Star Wars nerds. Having talents and knowledge has been replaced with consuming multi-billion dollar entertainment franchises. Yet to me, there is nothing nerdy about mass market blockbuster films or overpriced plastic toys.

You are correct, but the bigger issue has simply been the political climate, left leaning people sure as fuck became intolerant as hell of differing opinions, this didn't just effect nerd culture, but sure did some damage to it in particular.

Basically you have now for example forums where the forum owners only allow one opinion and will flat out ban users for the "wrong" opinion.

It's such a radical change from how the internet used to be, back in my day I remember people would argue politics back and forth till the cows came home, nobody wanted to take away the other side's voice, debate was the whole point.

I think it stemmed from the left's arrogance, they really thought they had it made when Obama was reelected and that right wing thought was basically dead, when it suddenly became clear that no, the war wasn't over, they spazzed out and in a desperate attempt thought if they just censored everyone everything would be ok, when it had the opposite effect.

Of course this is all very tied in with nerd culture becoming very corporate as you said, because the corporate world sure promotes leftist thought.

Unpopular opinion, early 2010's sucked.

I sort of agree, especially when you compare it to the 90's or even the early-mid 2000's.

Honestly, the whole era of 2008-2013 is sort of a weird time stuck between the totally awesome "Turn of the Millennium" (1995-2007) and the utterly miserable "Current Year" (2014-Present) and it doesn't really fit into the common pop culture perception of the 2000's (basically 2001-2006 or so) nor the hyper-political and ultra-polarized zeitgeist that dominated the bulk of the 2010's.

Nerd culture has also gotten more hostile to outsiders too. Let's not forget how the Steven Universe fandom drove a girl to attempt suicide for drawing Rose Quartz "wrong".

My advice is to stick to smaller fandoms and/or fandoms with more violent/thought-provoking/mature media. Ironically, the most toxic fandoms tend to stick to kiddie stuff or lovey dovey stuff.

This decade was okay. I liked the gay rights movement for one, but I feel like people nowadays are more sensitive then ever.

Unpopular opinion, early 2010's sucked.

It wasn't great, but it was generally preferable to the latter half of the decade.

The one exception being video games, video games were better in the latter half of the 2010s than the early 2010s.

2007-2013 was pretty good overall, I look back on that era with a lot of fondness.

It was far from perfect, not as good as what came before, but better than what's come after for the most part.

Post-irony, irony, meme culture or whatever you wanna call it needs to die honestly, too many people either communicate like drunk autistic baboons or shield themselves behind irony to avoid any semblance of conflict online.
Rate me optimistic but I hope that sincerity (as a broad concept) comes back in vogue
I thought post-irony was a good thing. Irony mocks everything but it never gets mocked back.
