I've been busy lately indulging in the tech world and I'd like to resurface with a bit of a gem.

Twitter and Open-Source Feminists hate Eggplants.

These blogs are insisting that the horrible Eggplant emoji looks too much like a dick and Emoji tweeters are harassing women with them.

The Node.JS community is up in arms over horrible Github commentators who insist on using this repulsive emoji to harass women in the open source world.

The Node.JS has other problems besides eggplant. A proud dangerhair womyn pointed out that the object method "suicide" is offensive to people who killed themselves and thus it should be renamed. It was passed.

Because those items do not have UTF8 emoticons.

I should explain what this is. When you type a character in your keyboard (or even ones not on your keyboard by using the numpad), you create a character. There are thousands, and thousands of characters on the most full-featured fonts. They include the entire Japanese, Arabic, Hindu, Vietamese, Korean, and Chinese alphabets, and Emojis. There are a lot of fun UTF characters in the shape of things, ranging from piles of poo to guns to smiley faces to eggplants.

However, not all fonts have these thousands of characters. Because of this, some people wanting to send emoji can't without help. Twitter, Microsoft, Google, and Apple all have their own fonts with custom emoji that replace the simple text character (if you have no support you will see a box like []) with a fully colored emoji (twitter variant).

Whatever shapes don't make it into the UTF8 set don't have corresponding emojis in most cases. They probably arbitrarily picked Eggplant because one of the developers for the UTF8 ref was Japanese and really liked Eggplants and they did it as a joke. It's totally benign and developers have fun, and development is fun, until these fucking animals ruin everything.
