Predictions, musings, scenarios, whatever you want, this is an open thread for anything end of the world related. There is a lot of discussion about the end of the world these days. Call it what you like; the End Times, Armageddon, the Apocalypse, the Reckoning, but its been on people's minds a great deal lately. But even with as much of a pessimist as I am, I can't get swept up in the hysteria myself. The end of the world or the human race just seems too incomprehensible for me to take seriously. In a lot of ways I feel like the only one not having fun at a party with the whole pandemic going on and all.
Rather than have this just be a doomer circlejerk, I want to know what people really think about the end of the world. What do you think it is most likely to look like? When did we come close? Was mutually assured destruction all it was cracked up to be? Are you a religious person, and/or is the end of the world in God's hands and not humanity's?
What would you do if the world really was coming to an end? Start praying? Try to hold on as long as possible? Kill yourself to spare a worse fate? Would you stick with your religion or try to improve your odds by looking to other dieties?
And if you are certain there won't be an end of the world, why? What assurances do you have that makes you think this way? Or is it simply a topic people should never think about, because there's no true way to set someone's mind at ease about it?
Was there a time in your life where you thought the world might end, but it didn't? I'm particularly interested to hear from people who grew up during the Cold War on this one.
I'm aware there's a six year old thread on this same topic, but I have a suspicion that due to current events people may have changed their minds since then. Call it a hunch.
