So uh, UPDATE. My roommate thought it’d be great fun to completely wipe my files so that he could download some huge ass game, on my phone, without my personal permission, while I was out visiting somewhere. I had just gotten the Earth Gem completed and kicked the Lich’s ass, and now I have 0 motivation.

So, my other friend is recommending I play 2 games for the “Full 2D and 3D experience.” I know nothing about FF VI/6 or FF IX/9, but these are the ones he recommended I go try for myself to get the best of both worlds.

What games do you guys recommend? It has been a long day and a 2 paragraph little blurb would be just fine. If there’s a specific version of the game, then I will look into it (Example, FF1 NES v.s FF1 PSP).
Sorry to hear that. Your friend is a dope-fiend.
Play 6 and 7. 9 I think is a risk. You might love it, you might hate it. It's not a good entry point because it superficially validates what outsiders typically say jrpgs are like (tedious, anime tone, etc).
And before anyone says "omg I love 9 how dare you", I do too. Just being realistic I feel.
6 is a good retro styled game and 7 is really quickly paced.

Berrakh speaks the truth, as usual. 9 does not represent this series as a whole, for better or worse.

6 took the jobs from 3-5 and merged them into one roster. Ergo, your decisions don't revolve around what to learn but who to use. There are no build traps.

Thank you. I have played 7. So I guess I’ll start with 6. What’s the best platform for it or console emulation (SNES, GBA)?
Please tell me you screen-lock your phone.
I don’t. Well. I do. But having it still be the standard 1234 code pattern I got since I bought the damn thing isn’t really a lock at all as much as it is a minor nuisance.

Final Fantasy VI is an easy one: the Game Boy Advance version. Good retranslation, classic graphics, and an extra dungeon in the post-game if you really liked it. The sound has some quality issues that bothered people enough to make a patch for the rom, but it never personally bothered me.

Other versions of FFVI are the SNES (fine, but no extras); PS1 (no extras except a couple of FMVs that mean nothing to you; also horrible loading times), and PC/mobile (terrible redesigned graphics and menus designed for a touch screen). Just play the GBA version.

Final Fantasy IX, on the other hand, is a slow game through and through. It's very good, but I'd really recommend you start with 6. Anyway, I've heard the Switch and Xbox One versions have weird slowdown here and there, so that's out. The Android version seemed fine to me. If the PC version doesn't have slowdown problems, I'd just suggest that one. The original PS1 version ran fine, but I don't recommend it just because it doesn't have a speedup button like in the modern releases, which you'll really need, since I'm not joking about FF9 being slow as fuck. Even the battles do a thing where they're introduced with the camera swinging around from different angles before you can even input commands. The game really isn't for the impatient at all.

Though, then again, the PS1 version's fine if you're planning to play it on an emulator with its own speedup button. It really is that vital to that game.

I am a heathen who likes the gba so don't ask me. I think visualboy advance is a nice and easy emulator to use so I use it.

This cannot be overstated. When people hear "it's slow" they often think "the story has a prolonged pace" when the reality is "that but also the game runs slowly too."

Alrighty, thank you very much. I will get the GBA files now and lock my phone with a 12 character password out of spite. I promise to go back to 2-5 another day, but that effort being sucked out really did put a bullet into my motivation.

Thank you. I’ll look into it. Currently I’m just using John emulators. They’re not bad, and have good frame rate. Works well on android, which is how I play these games for a more authentic feeling.

Okay, sorry for double posting, but I’m jarred how much the tone shifted in like 5 games.

”Magic and ancient kingdoms along with ancient beasts roam the land! Help us, 4 heroes of light!”

”See this witch whore? Yeah, she fried like 50+ soldiers in order to get away from us, now we got her hooked up to a mech that controls her thoughts, feelings and wants, to the point where she’ll stop breathing if we tell her so. Now, in her barely dressed form, let’s travel back down a huge ass mountain. Oh, did we forget, magic barely even fucking E X I S T S? And is S U P E R ancient?”

How far into the future did we go…?

Final Fantasy games all take place in parallel universes and FFVI takes place in a steampunk world. FFVI is notably darker than the others, but has fairly funny writing and generally optimistic characters with strong motivations.

I just bought myself the 3DS rhythm game and its surprisingly fun / addicting. So far have only played a few levels but the inclusion of 11 makes me so happy. Vanadiel has by far been my favorite MMO experience PVE wise with a story that made the world feel alive..i also feel like they did factions the best in 11 with rewards/story tying together into finales. Unrelated but they're bringing back Aion Classic next week which was my favorite PvP experience in mmo

I think a lot of the criticisms about what it changes, what it drags out and so forth are true, the remake does that. I think the things it stretches out are interesting as I wanted to see and know more of Midgar and the supporting cast for it. I think your sentiment on Vincent getting drawn out and it being interesting is the possible good that can come from this approach. Just think, Yuffie got a DLC, just imagine what like Red XII or Cait Sith can get. We already got a taste of something that with polish can be fun with stealth sections in DoC.

Also, I just really love the combat in FF7R.
I've heard you don't actually get to play as Red XIII. He's only in your party and does his own thing without your input.

If you've never played FFVI, you'll be in for a pretty excellent story. Even if the challenge isn't all that high*.

*GBA version has two bonus dungeons, both will beat your ass and will make you feel like you're playing one of the older titles in terms of difficulty.

He does his own thing, but he can be loaded as a playable character, albeit without access to his Triangle command or Limit Break. In an interview they mentioned they were gonna make him playable, but due to expanding the length of Midgar they didn't wanna introduce him half assed at the end of the game. He's basically slated to be implemented come part 2.

Here you go, have this.

Edit: As for @Smug Chuckler 's list PSX for 1 and 2 is fine, but I actually wanna recommend romhacks of the NES FF1 to fix translation and bugs is also an option, tho you miss out on the bonus content. 3's DS remake annoys me because it nerfed Sage and Ninja to jack off to Onion Knight, so emulation is a good call. 4 PSP is a good call for the original 4. 5 GBA is big iffy, it adds things, but the music fixes are spotty at best, they try, but it's been said they're not fully fixing it, just trying too. 6 GBA I'm not sure if it suffers any issues.

Not so much disagreeing with his list, some I wanna give alternatives to and others I wanted to discuss the caveats of those ports.

Just in the sound department, but it's a handheld console so it's to be expected.
Ah same problem as 5, check RomHacking.net then. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/657/ And as I was gonna say, someone's prob tried to fix and what do ya know? Here ya go!

Edit: I should be helpful and link 5's restoration as well. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/563/ These hacks on top of fixing the instruments, also fixes the frame rate issues the games had in being ported to GBA, for both 5 and 6.

I personally enjoy the DS remakes. 4 is debatable (I like the fair increased difficulty, but the other versions have more), but I think 3 DS is just a more enjoyable experience. Whichever version of 3 you go with, I recommend playing on an emulator with savestates. It's the hardest game in the series solely for the bullshit decision of having hours long dungeons with nowhere to save and weird sudden difficulty spiked.

The reason FF9 is the way it is is because it's a love letter to the dragon quest-esque fantasy worlds of the first 5 games and was the last time the original creator's vision of the series majorly influenced the direction. It was shocking when people brought home FF6 and it was in this bleak, industrial setting.

In a way, FF4 was also a turning point like 6 since it was a focused narrative with big dramatic moments. The creators designed for this in the ways they changed the battle system to speed up the pace and lessen time the player spent outside of battle thinking about strategy and jobs.
