somewhere around X it became way too anime inspired.
It's harder to relate to, that's for sure.

Larger-than-life type heroes work best in games with an action focus. This genre, fundamentally, is about starting at the bottom and grinding your way to the top. No amount of speedrunning can change that.

10 at least has that going for it. Yuna is a greenhorn, and Tidus is so hopeless that he needs to feign amnesia. The personalities weren't at odds with the gameplay, which is always a plus. That might be the whiskey nostalgia talking, though.

I think this is why I like 12 more than most sane people do. It feels like it has the right balance still.
And X is pretty good about backstory. Tidus' past with Jecht and whatever was going on with Shuyin was a good way of adding weight to his adventures. But the obvious reason he's in this for the long haul is Yuna pussy.

I hated Tidus because of his daddy issues. Like, Jecht was a bad father, but holy shit, get over it. I'm convinced Yuna only had sex with him because she was convinced they were going to die and the other candidates were her BFFs boy, a furry, or a zombie.

Whether Tidus was likable or not is a separate question. I didn't like him either. I just think the balance of backstory in his character and journey was good.
He's a microcosm of my issues with X as a whole: tone deaf

His mom is a thot, as well.(:_(

His problem is very simple. He's a bumbling 16-bit hero in a polygon world. I'd even go so far to say that he's a holdover from the 90s. Think Surf Ninjas or A Kid in King Arthur's Court. That's his role. To be tubular and trip up the 'establishment.'

Thematically, he works just fine. He and Yuna are living in the shadow of famous dads. Re-tracing the steps of Jecht was a smart way to make you 'walk in his shoes.'

I'm getting ready to replay FF6, and because I enjoyed my last playthrough of FF5 with a rom hack so much (it allowed more job customization. I forget what it was called, but I think I mentioned it earlier in this thread.) I decided to see if there were any interesting FF6 hacks, and I noticed that "Final Fantasy 6: Divergent Paths" was recently completed: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5997/
I'm having a hard time finding anybody talking about it, but it looks promising.

Has anybody else played it yet? It's a rom hack for the snes version, but the premise seems to be that a few small changes in the story mean that General Leo doesn't die, and he joins your party. And there are apparently other things that also happen.

There are a shit-ton of these hacks. LPs are scarce, and reviews are misleading. Might as well bite the bullet and try it.

I tried one of those hard-type hacks (Brave New World) and quit at the Whelk. It sucked.

Beyond Chaos and Worlds Collide are randomizers; but, since no seed is never finished, people play it to see how far they get before resetting. I have heard good things about the Ancient Cave mode (BC), though. It turns the base game into a roguelike.

This one is specifically claiming to "not be like those other girls" er... I mean, not necessarily "harder" than vanilla... (This excerpt is from the "Readme" from this hack.)

(I believe "Power Panda" is the guy who made this hack.)

I actually agree with you @JamesFargo, I don't really need to play a "harder" FF6, that's actually kind of why I was asking if anybody else had played this hack yet.
I beat vanilla FF6 years ago. This hack seems to change the story up quite a bit, and that seems like fun to me. I was just looking for other opinions.

Hell, I'll give it a try, I probably won't share it here though...

I think I might try it, myself.

Let's adjust our expectations. Every modder talks like they just created Half-Life in their basement.
I've actually played and beaten FF6 multiple times, on multiple platforms, and loved it every time. I genuinely look forward to seeing it remixed in a new way...

Speaking of which, that excerpt I just posted made mention of a new FF6 song (It's apparently a new theme for General Leo.)
The guy who was named as making the song posted it on youtube:
I'm not gonna lie... I kind of love it >_< Just like I love the rest of the FF6 sound track. I think it totally fits. I can't wait to play this.

Particularly if RNG is involved.
Not final fantasy but a lot of difficulty mods for Fallout 3 and New Vegas reduced the rpg elements by augmenting weapon damage. So the variations in weapon attributes no longer mattered really when a good headshot would kill anything. And also Super Mutants became easier than Raiders to engage with in combat.
