Basically the elites want us to consume less resources and reproduce less, as part of their population control plan. Their end goal is to own everything physical, with everyone else living their lives in internet VR worlds that take up zero physical space. See the World Economic Forum's plans for the "Great Reset" and look up the recent "Metaverse" that has been announced. But they can't force everyone to live like this because there's too few of them and too many of us, if they piss enough people off then their heads will roll. (this is also one of the reasons they want to reduce the population, to make us easier to control.)
Therefore, they have to make us want it. Make people want to live in the virtual world more than they want to live in the real world. Thus, they are both trying to make people want to be something that is not possible IRL, and make the real world shitty so people become less interested in it.
Make people struggle to maintain their real-life standard of living, by raising taxes and ruining education to make it harder to advance your standing. Make people physically and mentally sick with drugs and processed food. Then if they seek help for that, sell them medications that have other negative effects.
Control the flow of ideas, both to maintain control and make people angry that their opinion can't be heard, both as a demoralization tactic to reduce attempts at gaining political control, and to create a desire for people to live in a different world where they can speak their mind.
Make people depressed by making it harder for both genders to find fulfilling social and romantic relationships. Drive people insane by using media from an early age to implant unrealistic social expectations, and also to instill impossible desires, like wanting to be the opposite gender or wanting to be a real life furry. Feed them pornography to give them unrealistic sexual expectations and also develop fetishes (again, like troonism and furryism). This results in disappointment and frustration since meeting/getting others to meet unrealistic expectations and fetishes makes it much harder to form relationships.
Then, after creating all these physical and mental challenges designed to make people alone, frustrated, and depressed, show them a virtual world, where if they abandon the "real" world and live in the virtual one, they can have a high standard of living, in whatever body they want, alongside other like-minded people.
Lots of people would abandon the real world to live in a wish-fulfillment fantasy, if VR tech was good enough. I wouldn't, but a lot of people would. And that's what the elites want, because they need to have a huge percentage of people not reproducing or participating in the real world. When that happens, they can reach their goals of total asset ownership and significant population reduction.
