Women complaining about men "grooming" them, is really just them complaining about men using the same tricks and lies as they do. Like the Wall Street bitching about Robinhood and Crypto, they're just mad that poor people are making money men are outsmarting them.

I feel like Mega64 now is capitalizing on people not being able to grow up from that childhood you-can-do-anything attitude, and the people watching are vicariously trying to live their lives through Mega64, because the outside world of Twitter is much more somber. Mega64 are their parasocial friends, and so are their fellow internet soldiers. Real life? That's the place I can show off my cool new Mega64 merch. I also bought all the posters, the hoodies, the records, the Blu-Rays. I have Mega64 on my mind 24/7. If I close my eyes, I see Garrett, Shawn, Rocco, and Derrick on the podcast set.

You pretty much nailed it with the whole parasocial thing. It's funny this kind of turns into a mega64 grief thread since there really is no other place to vent about it.

A fun little tidbit I found and not mentioned here was this awkward moment:

I wonder if it finally hit her how fucking stupid she and Ashley looked during all this. It looked like she was coming to some level of realization in her final tweets, but who's to say she's not having a self-pitying meltdown right now?

This is the response I've been waiting for. Mega64 to me feels like such an unique beast when it comes to creators who fell from grace. They never really fell, but they never really rose either. Every time they could have become big, they basically shot themselves in the foot. It's good to stay true to youself and have integrity, but you shouldn't be stupidly overconfident or completely ignore any criticism that doesn't come from a place of pure worship. They could've been as big, if not bigger than Smosh or AVGN, had they played their cards right. But their downfall is always prevented by those loyal fans they have left.

I also think Mega64 is Nostalgia Pornography to some people who grew up with Mega64, watching their old vids in 2007, who haven't been able to move on to other content creators and that wish that they could be 12 again and make stupid videos with their friends. The early videos of Mega64 have such a nostalgic feel to them in hindsight, it almost feels feverish in a weird way. The colourful beauty of San Diego, the stupid pranks being pulled on unsuspecting pedestrians, the funny goofy humor of the skits, and the warm cozy feeling of the podcast and the personnal channel videos.

They are a cult of Nostalgia Millenials, stuck in perpetual childhood, just like the hosts themselves. I'm just glad I got out, before it was too late. Now, I'm trying to move on with my life by doing slightly less spergy things than watching Mega64, feeling way better already.
I think I get what you're saying, I believe I first read of Mega64 when they were mentioned in Nintendo Power back in 2005, and that era (the dawn of YouTube and their golden age) is very nostalgic to some people, and although they weren't big as AVGN or Channel Awesome at their height, they've always been there. (Plus the world circa 2006 seems a lot nicer than the world of today).

They also gave us the "skeptical Miyamoto" GIF (seen below) from one of their videos:
skeptical.gif

I never got into Mega64's podcast or whatever (that's for the better) and I have a low opinion of e-celebs. I don't think it's bad as a cozy relic of the past, though.

Ashley has made another statement on her IG. She's grasping for straws now, claiming that there are "other women" that have been abused by Rocco that are simply too afraid to come out, attributing the "abuse" she's gotten from fans of Mega64 as Rocco's fault as he didn't make a direct statement saying not to target her, etc etc. Judge for yourself. Beyond that, the video is in multiple parts because she couldn't record one coherent thought, and I lack the knowhow to stich these together, apologies.

Ashley, if you're reading this, we're not talking shit about you because we like Rocco. We're talking shit about you because you're a fucking idiot. Let this go. You have willingly entered into the kangaroo court of public opinion, wherein you already had a massive advantage being a significantly younger woman accusing an older famous male figure of abuse, and your case is so faulty that no one fucking cares. The best evidence you've provided are humiliating texts of him asking you not to leave, and those are also easily falsifiable. Leave it alone.

I was watching a lot of Mega64 a few weeks ago. Based on my likes, they're definitely deleting stuff.
one of the things I 100% know was deleted is the podcast episode where Rocco opens the podcast dressed in Avatar cosplay doing an Avatar prayer then everybody shits on him. It was over zoom so the ep was within the start of the pandemic. Wonder what they talked about:thinking:

This is why you shouldn't date if you're e-famous. A woman will just use you to get famous themselves. If you want to be with someone either do that before you start Youtube or whatever or after when your career naturally dies because a woman is just going to kill it for you.

Speaking of deletions, I wonder if any clips still exist where Garrett talked about that time he and a couple of his friends crashed a party and danced around naked wearing nothing but masks for a couple of minutes and then got the hell out of there

Oh man, I signed up just to respond to this post. Completely accurate. Having been a fan for nearly 20 years, I really only watch them out of nostalgia for simpler times. I'm from SD too, so there's a lot of "hometown boys" feeling associated with it. Couldn't give a shit about the fanbase, the merch, Mega64antine (who the fuck is Johnny anyway?), Funny Factory, etc. None of that is even on my radar. Went to their Discord once and by that time it was nothing more than hardcore fans fellating each other, with men in their 30's acting like teenagers in abundance.

Really not surprised Rocco finally got some minor shit for some minor relationship he had with an obsessed fan. Feel bad for the man more than anything - if you have to say that you were afraid to leave a relationship, either you're a full-blown manipulator, or you're serious. Rocco is a manchild from head-to-toe, but a sociopath he is not.

I do wonder when Mega64 will finally be disbanded. The boyz aren't young anymore, they're almost in their 40s. They're not really growing their fanbase either. How the fuck do they still have money? I know they make money off of advertisements, merch and patreon but they have around 2,600 patrons. Assuming they make 5 dollars on average from each patron (which I think is kind of a high estimate) then they're making $13,000 a month, which isn't much when split across all of them. I think they have a few more years left, but they're definitely waning.

It will continue to go on as long as people are buying their shirts. As others have stated, they're basically a clothing company now- for the past year, every time they do something that isn't the podcast or a scheduled livestream, it's on a "special day" like Mega6420, Hell Fest, 64XPO, 64 day, MLK Week, basically anything they can do to tie in with a shirt in commemoration of. Outside of the EVA videos, have they released anything that wasn't on one of these days?

You can see it with their new DnD die. They did a DnD stream, drop halfway through that they're selling a product to tie in with it (which is $21 after the staple $8 shipping), and people eat it up. One die for $21, and that's one product from one stream. On this note, it was quite funny seeing Derrick defend the die last night on the live podcast (because two people on twitter shit on the price), and then in the very next segment Shawn complain about the Padres overdoing their commercialization, and THEN seeing them all make fun of Rocco for spending $20 on a Ghostbusters toy. It's always astounding how unaware they can be of themselves, but it's easy to forget because they're next to Rocco.

Speaking of which, looks like Rocco deleted his statement on reddit a few days after it went up. That whole situation was the most Rocco thing imaginable, with him literally saying "Nah" to some of the allegations ("Nah" is what he replies with when it comes to YouTube comment criticism), talks of disneyland dinners, and mentions of green cards in texts (when he told Ashley he didn't want to marry her for "faggoty ass green card shit" but for love) He seems to understand that the best way to handle it is to sweep it under the rug, as talking about it on camera is a surefire way to get outsiders to hear about it and hold him to a standard that his fanbase will not. Even if what he did isn't illegal, I'd be surprised to see as many people associate with them if the extent of that relationship got out.

Just want to say I also used to love mega64. I was fan of theirs since 2005, bought the dvd’s off somethingawful from back when they were sold on there and followed them until about 2013. It just got to a point, like others have said, the fanbase became like a cult and I didn’t want to be a part of that. Heard about a lot of the weird controversies afterwards and wasn’t surprised. Still not surprised either at how version 4 is a being used to scam the remaining fans. This stuff with Rocco sticking his dick in crazies isn’t shocking to me.

One a side note, one small thing always stuck out in my mind and maybe an old fan can help out with this. Back when you could make video responses on youtube videos, there was some girl who kept doing video responses to mega64 uploads. I don’t remember her name, it must have been like 2009 or 2010. She had black hair and looked like a teen. They made fun of her a lot on the podcast like they did with all of the video responses. Then in one of her responses Rocco randomly showed up in the background in her house. Pretty sure that was the last video she did and the awkward feeling from the following podcast was that Rocco fucked her and there was never any talk about her again. The video responses got wiped or she did it herself, I haven’t been able to find them since.
