Email notifications are safe as long as you're fetching those into your main account through POP3 (or forwarding but that's less secure since someone can hack your webmail and read the forwarding info). It's been said here already.

I personally don't do that but it's not inherently unsafe if you do it right.

The only things I block are 5 minute email accounts (and now any .edu or .gov address). I ask people use a real email account and setup forwarding so I can keep in touch.
