The Grinch (2018) - You're a lame one, Mister Grinch

So, I saw this trailer when I went to go see Jurassic World:

Maybe this is just my age showing, but everything about it feels wrong. In the book and original animated special the Grinch looks (and sounds) genuinely mean, but here he never gets above just annoyed (as the trailer even states). It's like Illumination doesn't even want to try anything beyond Despicable Me with a different coat of paint. I'm not angry, just disappointed that kids today don't seem to get actually mean/frightening villains in their media (or at least a good chunk of it). I hope the book at least never goes away.

I really hate Illumination's animation. Everything is way too bright and the faces are super off-putting. It's something about the overall shape of the face that doesn't look right--both the smallness of the eyes in comparison to the giant gap in between the nose and the mouth. When put together, it comes off as disjointed and cheap-looking.

Boris Karloff will always be the voice of the Grinch to me. I don't understand why this is being made again, I know that plenty of people liked the Jim Carrey Grinch, I didn't care for it but I know some did.

I've voiced my displeasure about this in the Western animation thread, but one point I'd like to repeat is that once again Illumination went with Star Power instead of finding VAs that could do an American Mid-Atlantic Accent. Both Boris Karloff and Hans Conried (who voiced the Grinch/narrator in Halloween is Grinch Night) both used a American Mid-Atlantic accent when voicing the character as it allowed for significant menace while still allowing room for a little comedy. It's the perfect nasty grump voice, which is why Conried also used it for both Captain Hook and Snidely Whiplash.

The problem Illumination (and to lesser extant the Jim Carey Film had) was they confused a Mid-Atlantic Accent for a BBC British Accent. Hence why the selected Anthony Hopkins to voice the narrator in the Jim Carey Film and the second reason why Benedict Cumberbatch was chosen to voice the character. The problem is you can't get the level of grumpiness or nastiness with the BBC accent that you can with an American Mid-Atlantic Accent. I will say that Jim Carey at least tried to have a Mid-Atlantic Accent but his efforts repeatedly fell short due to him being more interested in trying to imitate Ron Howard, act like Ace Ventura on speed and sexually assault the resident T&A.

At least Jim Carrey sounded like he had fun in Ron Howard's movie (deapite the Guantanamo Bay torture-tier costume he had to wear), Cumberbatch just sounds bored

The trailer physically hurts me, and I hate, hate that Illumination is so damn obnoxious about their advertising. So this is unfortunately going to make its money back, but I see it going the way of The Lorax in a few years' time.

God, why did Dr. Seuss film rights have to be taken away from Blue Sky? Horton Hears A Who had its problems, yes, but at least it looked like Dr. Seuss. Also, Blue Sky perfected the squash and stretch cartoony effect in 3-D animation, and if anything deserves that treatment and give you nostalgic feels for the Chuck Jones' cartoon (while updating it for the modern age), it'd be The Grinch.
