I felt the same way about the 808 cowbell, almost always sounded terrible and cheesy even by the standards 80's presets. One of the few songs it sounds decent in is "Lonely" by Janet Jackson.

It's a habit from the way that the traditional drum set is set up.
For decades, drummers worldwide used 1 set up (with minor variations) for their drums and played 1 way (again, with variations).
Only now, because the majority of musicians play drums on MPCs or just draw them in a piece of software these days, the set up is different and we're finally starting to move away from it.
Still, something that ingrained in music will take a long time to fade away, especially since it makes music composition easier.
