I figured I might as well make a thread about my favorite genre of music, bluegrass.

Bluegrass is a wonderful genre of American music that originated in the Appalachian Mountains in the early 20th Century and was originally known as "hillbilly music" before gaining the moniker of "bluegrass music" in the 1940's.

It is a genre with roots in Scottish and Irish folk music, mainly due to Appalachia being largely settled by Irish and Scots-Irish immigrants in the 18th and 19th Centuries and is known for having a lot of talented performers, especially in regards to instruments.

Notable bluegrass performers include Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, The Country Gentlemen, The Osborne Brothers, New Grass Revival, The Seldom Scene, Old Crow Medicine Show, and countless others.

I love bluegrass covers of popular songs, and this cover is the best one in my opinion. It's also a very early cover, recorded the same year the original song came out.

As someone who started playing the banjo Scruggs style, I spent years telling myself that I liked Bluegrass. I was never in the mood to listen to it though, and when I forced myself I'd have to jump around to get to parts where I could hear anything other than a frenetic fiddle. Finally, I admitted to myself that I did NOT like Bluegrass, and switched to clawhammer style banjo and Old Time music. The banjo is a solitary instrument.

Bluegrass is like old-school metal guitar solos or jazz: it's technically impressive, but it's boring as shit to listen to.

Steve Earl is great, but I wouldn't call that bluegrass.

I don't have a problem with Bluegrass as a genre, but every time I hear Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show, I wanna smash any and all banjos and fiddles in my vicinity.

The Darius Rucker version has become a staple on mainstream country rafio in recent years, which gives me one more reason to have an Americana playlist and skip the mainstream pop country shit.
