Here's the thing, the story would be handwaved away if the gameplay was good. Playing games for a narrative never ends well because many with an actual narrative require 70 hours or more of investment, but those that do provide a narrative usually back it up with gameplay. So people who play games for the narrative usually 9 times out of 10 can't do gameplay. it's quite the catch 22.
it never did unless you worked in the game industry which in that case it totally fucking matters because winning an award can be put on your resume so theyre more likely to hire you if it's a technical award
