really enjoyed the the sky and crossbell games but wasn't a fan of cold steel at all, finished cold steel 3 and kinda left it there. you think it's worthwhile to pick up and play cs 4 even if i didn't enjoy the previous entries?

I'm surprised you didn't like cold steel series. Its genuinely the best jrpg out there but no contest to the YS games.

Your sole option at this point would be to learn moonrunes (which is technically the smart thing to do in case you care about japanese media as a whole without relying on a middleman). We've gotten as far trusting even fan-translators is not 100% possible these days.

and yes it's why XSeed lost the rights to Trails and Ys, because they got people who only learned Japanese to watch anime and play games.

No fan translation has ever worked because there's a billion fucking Jet, Aeon, and Nova fags who are all "experts" in Japanese and none of them can ever come to an agreement on what's accurate. Especially when shit constantly involves comedy or heavy sarcasm and wit like a Terry Pratchett adaptation. Accuracy with Comedy always fucks things up for translators because jokes(especially ones that rely on word play or quick witted puns) get lost when it turns out the accurate translation isn't actually funny at all. And if you fucked up the Comedy by making it not funny, you fucked up the translation.

And speaking of comedy, most of these people only can identify comedy if they can go LOL LEWD.

Tales of Berseria was the same way, once you get to the post game there are quite a few errors where the machine made a mistake and misheard words due to Eizen's and Rokurou's accents. But that didn't stop it from becoming one of the more popular Tales games.

Fan translations usually never ever intended to respect any medium. They're pissing contests on who's a bigger worshipper of Japan and how everyone else on the team is a heretic gaijin. Which is why many fan translation efforts fall apart, they tear each other up.

In JRPGs everything is secondary to gameplay, they're all heavily mechanics based. It's why they take very long to develop, everything else is a very very very distant second or third.

People really just need the basic jist of what's going on in order to enjoy the game. Obsessing over lore or intercharacter relationships to the point where one single word could change everything and putting that as the primary focus is what dragged down studios like bioware in to the bucket of crabs that it's currently in.

And going YOU HAVE TO LEARN JAPANESE TO ESCAPE THE WRATH OF THE SJWs is a tad bit of a comical extreme, in any scenario. Especially since linguistic purity has never worked like that even back in the 80's and 90's.

Azure and Blue got gigafucked by Corona, they were supposed to come out soon after 4.

They had shit in the works prior but there's no progress report on what they had translated. However they're also switching over to PS5 dev kits so, that's also adding time to things. They could be PS5 timed exclusives.

Crossbell has still got XSeed tied to it. Their chinese parent company has other ideas so it's up to that. They don't seem interested in a series where they only own 3 out of the 10 titles. Ys was lucky that it got MoC released on PS4.


Also look who's back, I was at least expecting them to hold off for the sequel before they reintroduced major characters.

You could try Falcom's other series like Ys 8 and YS 9, but that's more action rpg than turn based.

I can understand why people like it for it's intimate attention to world building and characters. But the Ouroboros global conspiracy shit and weird magic bullshit that compels people to rape and pillage completely ruins it for me. Why the fuck couldn't this series just stay relatively mundane? I could totally go for three games of Estelle becoming a badass high-fantasy cop who stops crims who are bad people because humanity is full of assholes. That shit is interesting alone and absorbs me into this wonderful world. But instead the franchise has to have some dumb illuminate who is secretly behind everything wrong with the world and is full of retarded villain sues with retarded backstories and powers more fitting in a 80s cartoon like Captain Planet or He-Man or a shitty shonen anime like Naruto.

I think you completely misread my post.

Although I am intrigued that there is more customization in cold steel, but fuck if I'll play it for the story. I just wish they actually give these games a good sale. I'm not buying Sky 3rd or Cold Steel for anything less than 50% discount and yet the company never lower the price at this range.
