Note: "Magical girl" refers to a genre rather than a specific series. However, fans of different magical girl series tend to intersect a lot so it can (and should) all be contained to one thread.

Ah, magical girls. You're so great, with your unrelenting positivity and healthy messages for boys and girls of all ages. It's only natural that you would attract fanbases full of happy, positive people- oh wait.

Despite basically every single magical girl series preaching messages of love, friendship, empathy, girl power, hope, and everything good in the world, many members of the magical girl fandom seem to love tearing other fans down and generally being horrible. This is because, unfortunately, any series that's even remotely female-positive tends to attract radfems in droves and it isn't long before they start pushing their agendas onto others and engaging in regular Tumblrina behavior. These radfems also tend to react to males in the fandom like they're made of sulfuric acid, screeching at them to stop "invading" their "safe spaces" while bitching about how literally every show ever is dedicated to men so they're not allowed to have magical girls; to defend themselves, radfems will often claim that they're trying to prevent the magical girl fandom from becoming like the My Little Pony one, although there's no evidence of that happening. In the end, ironically all they're doing is rigidly enforcing the gender norms they claim to despise.

Interestingly, older shows (such as Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura) don't seem to attract that much vitriol. But by far the absolute worst magical girl fandom is the Precure (or Pretty Cure) one. It probably deserves its own thread but I'm keeping it here for convenience's sake. I think what makes PreCure fandom drama so fantastic is that (by and large) the fandom is made up of women over 16 years old who are taking a series created to sell toys to little Japanese girls way too seriously.

One notable case is when a PreCure "callout" blog kept insisting that hentai of PreCure characters is and should be treated as child porn... despite the fact that they're just 2D characters. Like, I'm really grossed out by porn of underage characters, but putting it on the same level as actual child porn is so fucking insulting. The situation escalated after a blogged named Wolfrun told them to calm their tits and not make such a big deal out of it... at which point the blog implied that he is a pedophile who shouldn't work with children.

Magicalgirlconfessions, magicalgirlfanproblems, and the PreCure LiveJournal are amazing sources of drama, although you're going to have to do quite a bit of digging. If someone says something even remotely controversial, expect to see lots of flailing in the comments.

I'll add more later, but this OP is long enough. We haven't even scratched the surface of the confession blogs and what perpetual drama machines they are.

The Magical Girl fandom as a whole can get pretty messy. Before the brony fandom existed, it was always The Magical Girl fandom (after the furry fandom too) seen as the fandom for low lifer, socially inept neckbeards still living with mom at age 33 and cosplaying horribly. While the later two fandoms top the cake over the magical girl fandom regarding audience, there still is quite a bit of drama in the genre's fanbase as a whole, tumblr just helped make it broader and far more well known.

Long gone are the days of the neckbeards unhealthy obsession with the series making fools of themselves and laughing stocks on the internet and on forums (although they still exist), rather instead it's 20 something year old women on tumblr who grew up watching Magical Girl genre animes and now wound up worse than the neckbeards because of their bitchy attitudes, bad art style, and Social Justice pandering.

Oh man, speaking of magical girl fans, Madoka fans are the worst. Not only are they invariably yurifags and very vocal about they considering yuri to be ~the purest form of love~ (absolutely disgusting), but they also talk every 3 seconds about how Madoka is a complete masterpiece that has nothing wrong in it and no other anime will ever be as good and also it totally didn't rip off Kamen Rider Ryuki.

I'm a huge fan of Madoka, but the fandom has to be the worst one behind PreCure. I actually almost didn't watch the series several years ago because the fans were so horribly off-putting. They would (and still do) constantly bash older magical girl anime and talk about how stupid and vapid they are, completely ignoring the fact that without them Madoka Magica wouldn't even exist in the first place because it would have nothing to deconstruct.

Since Madoka had such a wide spread across the internet, I didn't even notice these fans. I still haven't come across a better anime. It is sort of sad that they had exactly one male character their age, as a love interest to a side character. That means you must gender flip for hetero(and I've seen those pairings).

I love Madoka Magica, but the fans really turn me off. The rabid shippers are the most annoying. I once found somebody who was a SayakaxKyouko nut who stated she became physically ill when she saw art depicting her in any other pairing. Even just 'hey, we're hanging out!' style stuff.

Oh, and the number of Sayaka fans who spend their casual time writing ways to brutally murder Kyouske has got to be in the low tens of thousands at least. Really, they make the in-series drama look tame by comparison.

So explain why this shit is so popular on Tumblr?

Welp it appeals to tumblr for one thing, it provides a form of escapism for many people. While I'm not personally a big huge fan of magical girl animes (there are some great series, such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, Precure, etc), I can see why many are into it.

Unfortunately for tumblr, most their users suffer from a case of no connection to reality and take this escapism as a form of life. The art style of Magical Girl animes have influenced their blogs with this whole "progressive kawaii" crap themes that attack your eyes with pink, baby blue, and turquoise themes. Another part to add on is that it's Magical GIRL, meaning it shows a girl as the hero of the series and male characters usually are put aside for romantic interests or villain roles, and with tumblr's incredible disdain for men, I can see why they're attracted to the Magical Girl anime genre. Just look at Steven Universe, Madoka Magica has pretty much influenced that series.

Like I said before, the genre went from being liked by only virgin neckbeard 33 year old basement dwellers and little girls to tumblrina Social Justice Warriors with daddy issues and hatred of men that used to be the little girls watching the series. It makes sense where their hatred of men came though, with the neckbeards watching the same series as them growing up.

It appeals to their inner autistic child? I don't really know much about the magical girl genre other than knowing Sailor Moon is a part of it but thing I remember in regards to magical girls and tumblr was in the SJW Art Extremes thread. IIRC, @Yaoi Huntress Earth, or perhaps some other user such as @Jaimas , mentioned how they sperged over magical girls, all while being hypocritical with their outfits in saying there was nothing wrong with them (or something similar to that) while every other work of fiction where women aren't in "realistic practical armor" is wrong.

Considering how Magical Girl Fans @Cosmos mentions want men away from their precious "safe space", have they ever in anyway butted heads with otakus that sperg over magical girls?

Also, careful with mentioning how you like the show, that can come off as powerleveling to some other users.

Since we're talking about magical girls, can we bring up shipping wars? Cause those are the best.

Yes, you may absolutely bring up shipping wars. I've personally enjoyed trolling rabid shippers with CanonxOC pairings more than once. The responses generally range from 'how could you?!' to 'people who molest children are infinitely more worthy to draw breath than you are'.

Shipping wars? Like if FedEx or UPS is better? :P /s

Yeah, Shipping Wars usually is the first sign that a fandom is going downhill, when people care more about romantic interests in between characters than the actual story and plot.

The shipping wars can get insane, and with the SJW side, you dare bring up Sayaka's relationship with Hitomi (one of the most important male characters in the series), they'll flip out that you're "forcing a straight relationship" on them, which I find ridiculous, because they want to keep the small lesbian overtones in the fandom alive, because each of the magical girls show some sort of platonic or romantic interest in each other, but to the SJW side, they get pissed when you dare ship two childhood friends of the opposite sex.

I swear, they're like the frickin fundamentalist Christians that piss their pants and threaten to boycott a TV station for having a gay relationship in a TV show.

On the whole, these types of people tend to only have yuri (or female x female) ships. Heterosexuality is sacrilege to them. The Madoka Magica and PreCure fandoms are infamous for this. Some older magical girl shows like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura have it a lot better because they feature strong supporting male characters, but many series (PreCure and Madoka, most notably) have basically no male characters whatsoever (or if they do, they're villains). All of the significant relationships are between girls, so it's not hard to see why yuri is so rampant.

The real fun happens when you see yuri fans react to any maleness in their yuri fantasies whatsoever. I remember PreCure fans throwing a tantrum not too long ago because the newest PreCure series contains a guy in an important role and the main character has a crush on him. They were acting like it meant the end of the PreCure franchise.
