The Nadir of Music - Which period of recorded music do you think sucked the most?

If you were to ask me, I'd say the 2010s, but to be fair, a lot of popular music from every decade has been utter shit. Though back in the day they could at least say they had some sort of musicianship, as bland as the stuff they made was. Another era with really bland and boring pop music was the 70s. At least all the pop music from then I've heard.

There has never been a worse time for metal than the 2010s. Every band that was good from a decade ago has been forced to water down their music for the modern day limp wristed pussies.

Going from "you cry like a bitch!" to "it's stressing me out :("

All decades have had crap music, but let's be honest- Much of the crap from before 2005 or so are at least tolerable to listen to most of the time.

After that however, the crap's overtaken even the barely listenable shit. And we still haven't reached the lowest depths of banality yet.

The late '90s and early 2000s might be the single most dreadful period of recorded popular music. A surfeit of shitty boy bands, dreadful Pop songs, wimpy Pop Punk, overplayed Alt Rock, douchey Rap Rock and Post-Grunge all defined the decade.

This period. That being said, it did give rise to the meme-tastic CRAWLING IN MY SKIN.

And "Oops, I Did It Again" was quite good.

When Children of Bodom covered it, of course \m/

But basically, the nu-metal era in a nutshell was craptacularly shiteariffic.

The mid 2000s was pretty pants what with fucking indie bar chord nonsense like the Arctic Monkeys and Snow Patrol and fucking Coldplay (music for people who don't like music). That, and so-called "rap" that was basically "have I mentioned I am mega rich today" and so-called "r&b" that was neither rhythmic nor bluesy but relied on skimpy costumes and appealing to thirsty teenage virgins. That was just embarrassing.

Also, current music from 2013-present is pretty dire for the most part. Ed fucking Sheeran, the soundtrack to "just girly things" memes, and other bollox like that. One Direction can go eat a bag of dicks, as can all the other boybands. Current so-called "popular" music is basically the colour beige in sound form. I'd rather listen to the cheesy muzak from a 1990s porno tape.

Oh yes. Grime can fuck right off as well. Some pointless kid who was scooped up off the streets of the shit part of London because he mumbles a lot about how hard he is. Also why does every grime "artist" look like a rapist.

Assuming we're talking about recent history and not caveman beats, my first impulse would be to say the 90s, but quite a few darling albums were released in that time like Either / Or, Spiderland, and pretty much all of Unwound's discography except for Leaves Turn. That stuff on its own is enough to redeem all the boy band and nu-metal garbage that started to thrive during that time. So by a thin margin, I'd probably say the 80s. I just cannot for the life of me get into the "sound" of that decade. A lot of the "classics" I just can't stand. I think my brain tumor grows a bit bigger every time I hear "Lips Like Sugar."

To me, it feels like the popular music of every decade only gets more garish and stupid as it moves into it's later years, so I'd say pop stuff from any year that ends in a seven, eight, nine or zero.
